they know what everybody knows better sit, a letter from a thief says TAG: Vexy Vex Words: 717
ONE LAST THING: A thread starter I'm mildly pleased with? WHAT IS GOING ON.
Coins clattered along the top of the bar, giving the approaching form of Brynjolf the full attention of the young fellow behind it. The thief propped his hands up behind the scattered pile of money, looking the other man in the face. ”That’s for a pair of meads, lad. Don’t go mixin’ ‘em in the same mug, either. Second one’s for a second person.” The fellow nodded in understanding and started raking the coins toward his open palm, leaving Brynjolf to alternate between watching this slow process and taking in the rest of the Flagon around him. It was a little before midday if Brynjolf hadn’t lost track of time, and while the thief, so familiar with the typical array of patrons, couldn’t call the Flagon scarce, the tavern certainly wasn’t at its busiest. For Brynjolf, fewer people meant fewer opportunities to pass off the second mead and fewer opportunities to use the drink as a means to acquire a little help for the day’s task. He tapped his fingers against the top of the bar without much of a hint of impatience…not at the bartender, anyway, who was busily fetching the meads.
Brynjolf simply could not understand why some of the people in the city failed to uphold their end of the arrangement with the thieves guild. They complicated things for themselves and also made the guild less efficient – a thief out in the open, having to toss a few business partners up against their own walls by the collar, did the guild little credit in the long run. Unfortunately for Brynjolf, his ability to walk out in public most days without the nearest zealot – save for that Mjoll – trying to throttle him for being a thief meant that he usually had to be the one to go out and make sure the businesses and individuals under the protective umbrella of the guild were paying their dues. Usually, if he couldn’t be bothered with the task, he’d assign it to one of the newer members, especially if Brynjolf had recruited the fresh face personally. The months came on occasion, though, when the rounds were rougher than usual and a couple of the inexperienced guild members couldn’t be found. This particular month happened to be one when Brynjolf was tagged with doing the work himself, and what brought him to the Flagon was his search for an accomplice who could make his day go easier and discourage any aspiring duelists from drawing a sword on him and making a scene. Brynjolf didn’t start his searching for said accomplice until the bartender placed the mead bottles in his hand.
He turned around in place, setting up the other bottle at his side as he took the first sip of his own. Brynjolf’s search didn’t prove to be a long one, considering he didn’t have many to choose from and likely wouldn’t have picked out much of anyone over the blond head he could see nearby. Vex had a talent, one that Brynjolf respected more than the overly sensitive, for having quite a lot of callous things to say to generally anyone she crossed paths with. Considering that the unfaithful guild partners that Brynjolf was aiming to visit today probably needed someone to drop a few insults in their laps, he thought that the company and assistance of Vex might make the day pass on a little more smoothly than if Brynjolf had been forced to carry along one of the more soft-spoken guildsmen. The only problem here would be convincing Vex to go along with the idea, but Brynjolf was fairly sure he could keep her from handing him an outright no. Besides, he’d bought her a drink. A drink was clearly enough of a reason for her to spend her afternoon with him.
Easing himself up beside her, elbows propping him up, Brynjolf only peered at her through the side of his vision, keeping quiet and working on a few sips of his own drink until the...opportune moment. Gods knew when it was an opportune moment to drop a proposition to this woman. "Vex," he began, a slyness to his tone, as he held out the second mead, "you don't happen to have any upstandin' favors that you owe me, by chance?"

unlike candlehearth hall, however, the ragged flagon was usually pretty quiet. it's residents usually only comprised of delvin, dirge, tonilia, vekel and herself, although the odd guild member or lowlife dragged their selves in for a drink on occasion. it seemed a few of the newer recruits had decided to celebrate their successes, being rowdy at a table nearby. they had asked vex to join them, only for her to decline not so nicely. she was above that, and instead of joining delvin at his table, vex had decided to simply lean against the crates, her bottle of mead in hand. all she really wanted was to be left alone.
but it seemed someone had other ideas. even in her peripheral vision, the hulking form of the nord thief was immediately recognizable. despite him being officially her superior, vex paid him no heed. whether he was merely joining her for a drink, or desired to speak with her, vex didn't particularly care. she was enjoying her brief respite from the antics of her fellow thieves too much to break her silence for brynjolf.
it was all she could do to keep a smirk off her face when the nord finally spoke. so he wanted something from her, did he? slowly she took a sip from her own mead, still not meeting his eyes. she was content to make him wait, let him think she was considering it for a second before giving her answer.
"no." her answer was short and brief, knowing exactly what brynjolf was angling for. he wanted her assistance, no doubt, but the way he was sidling up to her meant it was most likely something undesirable. or something only she could help him with. either way, vex was going to make him sweat. not bothering to look at him, vex's eyes continued to survey the inn in front of her, looking over each occupant in turn. "though i can recall a few you owe me." she finished the dregs in her bottle of mead, placing it on top of the crates and crossing her arms over her chest. she waited a few moments more before acknowledging brynjolf's presence again.
finally she turned towards him with a sigh, eyebrow raised expectantly as her hand took the mead. she didn't drink it immediately, her eyes instead wandering over his face for a second before asking after his reasons for speaking to her. "what is it you want, bryn?" her tone was abrupt as always, wishing he'd just spit it out already. all this.. slyness, while characteristic for him, got on her nerves. he should know that it didn't earn him any favors with her. despite that, however, she was grateful for the mead. she wondered if he had noticed her own was empty before bringing it over. "need me to cut somebody down to size? or is this a more.. personal favor?" her lips curved into a little smirk at that, though the suggestion was only made in jest. sure, there had been a time when she had found him quite fetching, but it hadn't taken long to drum that out of her. regardless, his reaction would be entertaining, and vex continued to watch him, crossing her arms over her chest once more. |

they know what everybody knows better sit, a letter from a thief says TAG: Vexy Vex Words: 489
ONE LAST THING: Bah, kind of short.
One thing Brynjolf could always say about Vex was that she never disappointed. Eying her with hidden amusement as she made a valiant effort to ignore him, Brynjolf made as much of an effort to keep his focus on her as she was surely making to avoid providing him with any sort of attention or even acknowledgement in return. Once she finally spoke, providing him with nothing but a no, his mouth momentarily tore into a grin before returning to its previous neutrality. He kept the mead held out for her until she continued. He shrugged as if he couldn’t argue with her and nodded. ”You should add another favor to my list, then. Who knows what you could convince me to do once I owe you enough.”
Apparently Brynjolf had done enough to get her to finally digress and look at him, and he made note to provide her with the most charming of smiles he could muster once she took the drink and asked what it was that he wanted. The sip Brynjolf took to buy time before he explained his plans for the day afforded Vex enough time to follow up on her questions with a couple more. At the latter question, he couldn’t help but cut his eyes to her slyly. ”I wouldn’t mind a personal favor or two… ” There had never been any doubt that Vex possessed the looks and alluring personality to draw eyes, with Brynjolf being just as susceptible to both facets of his fellow, much more feminine thief as any man would be. Brynjolf had always given her space, though, as he knew at least enough about her past experiences with his gender to know that indulging any fellows of Brynjolf’s ilk most likely wasn’t high on her list of ambitions. Still, if Vex ever made a more genuine offer than this one, Brynjolf wouldn’t have to spend long in considering the proposition.
Delving more into the matter of personal favors seemed like something to bring up to Vex later, when he wasn’t attempting to talk her into spending her afternoon in helping him with mundane guild work. ”Today, I need a little more of the former,” Brynjolf finally explained, ”Got some problems with some of our partners in the city. Not a single payment from four of them this month or the last.” Naturally, Vex would understand what he was proposing to her already, but Brynjolf continued in an effort to keep her from outright saying no to him. ”I’ll do all the talkin’. All I need from you is a few harsh looks and insurance that the task won’t turn into an unnecessary brawl in the streets. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to hold a few brats against the wall by the collar. A little fresh air couldn’t hurt, either, Vex.” Turning and propping his elbows against one of the crates, he waited with anticipation for her answer.

Dx | [atrb=border,0,true] "who knows what you could convince me to do, when i owe you enough."
vex couldn't help but smile at that. it was a small one, barely more than the corners of her lips twitching upwards, but it was a smile all the same. "you keep bringing the mead, and i might just write those favors off." vex stated, taking a swig of the tankard she'd taken from him. free drinks sounded incredibly appealing to vex, though she doubted it would happen. still, a girl could dream..
her smirk only widened as brynjolf stated he wouldn't mind a personal favor. "is that so?" she questioned him, arching an eyebrow. "i'd have thought you were above that sort of thing, bryn." vex lowered her voice, looking up at him from under her lashes. it didn't last long before she let out a harsh laugh, shaking her head before drinking more mead.
lowering the mug, vex's face returned to normal as bryn finally delved into what it was he really wanted from her. scaring people out of skipping payments wasn't something that immediately appealed to vex, but with the thieves' guild heading the way it was, they needed every septim they could get. when the nord thief finally stopped talking, vex's lips parted into something of a smile. "so i'm the muscle, huh? if they're men, they certainly won't like that.." most wouldn't think the imperial had much to her, but they were very wrong. slim and barely reaching average height, vex was stronger than most realized. her muscles might have been slender, rather than the bulk of nords, but they were there all the same. vex would never get over seeing the shock on people's faces when her rough manner defied their expectations.
"couldn't you just send one of your wonderful recruits?" vex gestured towards the table of guffawing youths, some of whom could barely grow a beard. turning herself to look at them, vex's smile turned cruel. "you really scraped the barrel with these ones, bryn. i bet some of them don't even know how to use a sword." turning her attention back to the nord, vex's expression let him know her suggestion was merely made in jest. vex would never trust something like this to any of their newer members. none of the guild's partners would take them seriously. brynjolf on the other hand.. well, he was almost the face of the guild. their partners would realize immediately the err of their ways.
"alright, fine. i'll come." vex answered finally, after watching brynjolf for a few moments more. getting out of the flagon would be good for her, as brynjolf had said. "but you owe me. big time." the look she fixed him with hopefully alerted him to the fact that vex would not forget it. chasing up payments was not her job, though she did agree it was best for the guild. downing the rest of her mead, vex put the tankard on the crate, wiping her mouth carefully. "where first?' she asked, already eager to get it over and done with. |

they know what everybody knows better sit, a letter from a thief says TAG: Vexy Vex Words: 705
ONE LAST THING: Feel free to go ahead and usher them into town/Haelga's place!
”It’s a deal.” Brynjolf raised his bottle to toast Vex’s proposition about his intangible debts to her and turned it up for another drink. It was almost a shame that he wouldn’t get to see what Vex could come up with for his return payment, but he had a strong feeling that buying her a bunch of drinks – something Brynjolf would tend to do at times anyway – would better help to maintain his health and possibly his dignity in comparison to the fruits of the lady’s imagination.
It sounded to Brynjolf like the fruits of her imagination were growing from a more intriguing vine today, though, if she was speaking of personal favors. Brynjolf narrowed his eyes at her coolly, wondering if she wasn’t leading him into a trap with this line of thought and that blatantly heavy look with which she regarded him. Damn if Vex wasn’t doing a good job if that was her aim. As she let out her laugh, he matched it with a few low chuckles of his own, running a finger thoughtfully around the mouth of his bottle. ”If by ‘above’ you mean ‘too busy to spare time for sensual pleasures,’ lass, you’d be right on the money.” And with the way things had been going for the guild lately, Brynjolf found time spent on himself to be dwindling consistently. He had a large stake in maintaining the guild’s presence through manpower and outside arrangements, so with the whispers starting up as to the outfit’s struggles, women tended to be the last thing on Brynjolf’s mind unless he found himself recruiting or arranging a deal with one. Vex at least broke him out of his business posture long enough to remind him of his intrinsic masculinity.
And hopefully, any business he handled today would involve the lady. Taking her smile as a reason for optimism, Brynjolf pointed the top of his bottle at her before taking a drink. Of course Vex’s favorite part would be acting as the muscle. Wasn’t it humorous to have a Nord his size trudging around with a borderline petite female Imperial alongside him, with the Imperial doing the manhandling? ”That they won’t. It’s a perfectly good chance to get a few nice jabs in on someone’s pride,” Brynjolf teased slightly, ”An offer you can’t turn down, eh?” Ah, but Vex probably could find a way to turn him down. Never doubt the talents of a thief for slipping her way out of a situation.
Brynjolf turned around in place to face the room with his back to the crates and regard the table of youths that Vex indicated. Immediately, he provided his fellow thief with a deadpan look. As much as Brynjolf was willing to vouch for the talents of the majority of the thieves he recruited into the guild, none of them had the mental discipline just yet to handle one shakedown job, much less four in a single day. He and Vex both knew that very well, so he didn’t need to voice the notion of keeping these fledgling thieves before them as far away from Riften’s guild associates as possible for now. ”If they could make swords out of coin, we’d have some fighters on our hands,” Brynjolf told her, as an aside, before finally hearing what it was he wanted to.
”You’re a lifesaver, Vex, and I’ll drink to that,” Brynjolf told her, taking a long drink to down the rest of his mead before stepping over to drop the bottle on a table. With hands on his hips, he turned to regard her. ”Drop some drinks onto my tab if you can’t find me later on to pay this one back. I know this work can get tedious.” Dusting his hands off a bit out of pure habit, Brynjolf angled his head as an indication for her to follow and he could explain it on the way. ”We’re givin’ Haelga a visit to start off. If we can pull her head out the ass of that statue she worships and if she’s not arguin' with that servant girl of hers, she shouldn’t be all that much trouble. Good way to warm ourselves up for the rest of the rounds.”

She knew he was busy trying to salvage the Guild's reputation and return it to its former glory days, so Vex could believe it was true. More so because she found herself in a similar situation. She wasn't as busy as Brynjolf, but finding and delegating out jobs to the guild members was a lot of work, even though she shared the load with Delvin. And Vex wasn't usually one to spend her free time in the company of men. More than anything, she wished she could just sit and drink for an evening without worrying about the Guild's gradual decline. Which was partially why she was so hesitant to give her time up, even if it was for the Guild's benefit. Instead of saying so, however, Vex just smirked. "You and me both, Brynjolf."
As she voiced her thoughts about being the muscle on the job aloud, Vex expected Brynjolf to jump on it, encouraging her as a means of persuasion. She knew he was teasing, but she stared at him all the same. He'd known her too long to not know that Vex rather liked the idea of holding power of people. Being intimidating was probably one of her more, and more than that, she was good at it. It came effortlessly with her rather violent temper and cold glares. Most times, Vex played it up, but she liked to think that even when she was in the occasional good mood, she remained a rather frightening person. The imperial saw it as a good thing. She'd never liked cowards anyway, so the fact that most kept their distance was perfectly fine by her.
"Yeah, well. Like I said, you owe me." Vex said dismissively, though her attention was pulled back to the Nord when he mentioned putting drinks on a tab for him to pay. "And I don't want drinks either. When I think of something suitable, I will find you. Don't worry." The hint of a smile played upon the corners of her lips before turning away and follwing him as Brynjolf explained the job to her. Vex nodded, quickly falling into step beside him. She remained silent the entire journey through the Ratway, glad to find there was nothing to hinder the two thieves on their walk to the surface of Riften.
Emerging into the sunlight, Vex had to blink her eyes a few times to allow them to adjust. She'd been underground since nightfall, and it was impossible to get anything brighter than the glow of the candle down in the Flagon. Sunlight was rare to see when she was based in the underground tavern, but even blinded she knew her way around Riften. Walking next to Brynjolf, the pair made their way towards Haelga's Bunkhouse. By the time they reached the building, Vex was almost sad to go inside again. Brynjolf had been right; Vex had needed the fresh air.
But she was here now, and there was a job to be done. Pushing Brynjolf back by putting a hand on his chest, Vex ensured she'd enter the building first. Pushing open the door, Vex strode inside, pleased to find Haelga was standing behind her counter. "Hullo, Haelga." Vex greeted the woman, the thief's manner entirely pleasant with the exception of the rather cruel grin on her face. Moving to stand back and let Brynjolf do the talking, as he had said he would, Vex kept her eyes on the Nord woman, ready to act at a moment's notice. |

ONE LAST THING: Well hey, muse.
”I’ll have to hope ‘suitable’ doesn’t mean loss of health or dignity,” Brynjolf said lightly, returning Vex’s smile before turning to lead them out of the tavern and the Ratway as a whole. The company, especially the company of someone as useful as Vex, would make this work - the kind of thing that Brynjolf usually worked to pass off to the young ones with unrecognizable faces - a little more pleasant. Some did find their reasons for going to blows with the younger guild members who showed up at their door to ask for their pay. If someone was stupid enough to try and start a fight with two guild members – two of the senior guild members, at that – Brynjolf would applaud their courage and scoff at their stupidity. Today would fly by if Riften’s business owners and private investors still had any sense. Of course, if they weren’t paying their dues to the guild in the first place, how could he expect them to do anything sensible? It was bad business for every soul in Riften when money wasn’t properly flowing through the guild. Unfortunately, the guild in its current state couldn’t afford to prove its point by cutting off parts of the city from its money. The guild would go down in flames along with those businesses. The thought made Brynjolf frown deeply as he and Vex stepped out into the open air. Force was what the guild had to turn to in these trying times.
Silence carried them across a few of the city’s streets and towards the place that Haelga ran and her niece – a girl that Brynjolf rarely heard say anything if it wasn’t a complaint – helped keep clean. Brynjolf knew about the woman’s strange dedication to Dibella; that dedication was one of the things he regularly held over her head in order to get her to pay, since both of them knew that a lot of people in this down would string Haelga up by her neck or send her out into the wilderness if they found out about her daily worship. Why she would risk his spreading the word by not sending the guild her payments was a mystery to the Nord. Brynjolf stepped forward to open the door to let them both in, but Vex’s hand stopped him and left him to stand with a slight smirk on his face as she made her entrance and greeting first. Haelga should know she was caught in her own trap from the start.
Brynjolf stepped in behind Vex, noticing Haelga staring incredulously at the smaller Imperial before her eyes settled on him and set in defiance. The thief made sure not to give the woman a chance to speak; it looked as if she’d already had one of her arguments with her niece this morning. Her morning would only get worse if she proved troublesome. ”You should be happier to see us, Haelga,” he began, as he stepped up to the counter and propped both of his hands on it, inclined towards her. ”You and I both know your deal with the guild benefits your bunkhouse as much as it does the guild’s business ventures. Can you give me one good reason why we haven’t seen a payment from you in two months, or do you want to pay up now and save Vex and I from havin’ to shake the coin out of your trouser pockets?”
Brynjolf could have guessed from the way Haelga’s expression hardened as he spoke that the answer he received wasn’t going to be the one he wanted to hear. To her credit, Haelga didn’t physically shove herself at him as she seemed to want to do, instead standing back and crossing her arms over her chest. ”Do you think I can make your pay appear out of thin air, Brynjolf? And do you really think that I care about your operation anymore? I’ve heard what’s been going on.” Brynjolf shot a displeased glance at Vex, knowing she would be just as disgusted to hear Haelga’s rant as he would be. ”Your little group of thugs has no right to ask for any of us to pay you anymore. You don’t have the shoulders to shove us around with. You want our pay because you need the coin, and if I don’t want to give it to you, I’m not going to.”
Taking in a breath of calm, despite the fact that he didn’t have a temper to speak of anyway, Brynjolf leaned down further to rest on his elbows and continue to look the lady across from him in the face. If everyone took this stance today, it was going to be a long one. ”You’re only diggin’ yourself a deeper hole, Haelga. We can convince you to pay, one way or the other. It’s up to you whether we have to resort to the ‘other’. Vex doesn’t often come along; I’m sure she has plenty of ideas she’s thought up on how to deal with dishonest partners.”
