It was late evening and the wind was icy on Morrigan’s face. They stood above the ruin, on a cliff overlooking its entrance. Her hair billowed about her in the wind, but she paid it no mind, her eyes were trained on the Thalmor guards moving about the entrance, in practiced rhythms, walking their beat.
“The diamond’s still interred in the main chamber where they’re running their magical tests on it. Now, from what personal experience has taught me, this place was constructed specifically to guard the diamond. Expect maze-like corridors and traps no doubt.” Morrigan mentioned to Vex, rolling her shoulders. “There’s only 4 guards, we’ll need to kill them. Hope you’re up for it.” Morrigan didn’t wait for a response before dropping off the cliff, a rope tied to a nearby tree clutched tightly in her hand. Her vampiric nature was ensure her a safe-landing, but she knew there would be no way for Vex to follow, hence the rope. Landing softly, she let the rope drift. Vex could follow on her own initiative.
Moving behind one the guards, her hands found the sides of his face and with a hard wrench to the side, his neck broke clean. There was a yelp of pain or a scuffle of armor as she held him to her slowly lowering the corpse to the ground, silent as a shadow.
But still her efforts weren’t enough, because it was at that moment that another of the guards turned to look at his companion. And saw her.
The lightning bolt the elf threw towards her slammed hard into her hastily erected ward, causing a spider-web of cracks to form across the magical force she projected from her palm. Pushing her magicka into it, she dropped the spell in a burst of energy that dispelled the lightning bolt as well.
But the damage had been done.
Lightning bolts are loud after all. And this was proved true as the other guards were alerted to her presence, and several more rushed from their tents. “Well…shit.”

what morrigan said didn't faze the imperial in the slightest. in fact, it excited her. it sounded right up her alley. the maze-like tunnels hopefully wouldn't prove too much of a problem, considering the ratway vex called home was practically a maze all in itself. she arched an eyebrow at hearing that the guards would have to be killed. vex wasn't usually used to being so brutal with her targets; sneaking was an art when it came to theft. but she had no qualms with killing them. it was just part of the job.
her eyes watched morrigan jump and land rather gracefully. "bloody vampires.." she murmured, waiting for the rope to drift back her way before leaping for it, and lowering herself down to the ground. by the time she was close enough to jump, vex was several seconds behind morrigan.
ducking into the shrubs, vex watched for a moment before deciding to make a move. she saw the lightning bolt hit morrigan's ward, and saw both disappear with limited understanding of what was going on. magic had always been beyond vex's grasp, and she had never put much faith in it. drawing the bow that was slung across her back, vex notched an arrow, taking her time to line it up with the gap she knew was in the thalmor agent's armor, because his neck and shoulder. with the low light, vex couldn't see it, per se, but she knew it was there, and with any luck, she'd be able to slip an arrow in there easily enough. drawing the bow string back, vex held it for a second before releasing, the arrow singing as it flew through the air. she didn't wait to see the result, putting her bow back and drawing her swords, but from the grunt she heard, she'd at least hit her target somewhere.
circling around as far as she could, vex suddenly darted from the bush, moving swiftly across to where morrigan was standing. "no need to thank me." vex half grunted when she was close enough, but by that point, there wasn't much time for chatting. already, more guards were coming out of their tents, no doubt woken by the use of magic. "so.. four guards, hm?" vex asked under her breath, hurriedly sheathing her swords and drawing her bow once more. there seemed to many of the guards to wait until they were all upon them, but vex was hoping she'd be able to at least slow a few of them down before they reached them. loosing a couple of arrows in their direction, all vex could hope was that morrigan had some magic left to knock a few of them out of action. |

Another moment is another eternity Morrigan’s paranoia about how dangerous the Thalmor truly were was proved true when she had deflected that lightning bolt. She had expected a spell with more energy behind than any hedge-wizard, but she hadn’t expected the god-strike that came flying towards her.
They train their mages well.
She heard the whistle of the arrow before she ever saw it, suddenly sunk halfway to the feathers in the gap between the man’s shoulder and helm. A quirked smile came to her lips as the Mer collapsed, choking on his blood, hand clenched at his throat; clawing for a life that was now denied to him.
No need to thank me Morrigan smiled at the Imperial’s tone. “Fine, I won’t. Good shot though…” Her eyes narrowed as more and more guards pouring from the tents, elven armor and magically summoned blades gripped in white-knuckled fingers. They understood who she was, and who her companion was. The elves understood that not all of them might survive.
Good…
“Everyone makes mistakes, Vex. Besides – this can be fun.” She had been anticipating the next blast of lightning, and Morrigan’s ward shielded both herself and Vex from the battle-charm, her spell holding firm against the crackling power.
Twisting to the side as she dropped her spell, Morrigan rolled away from the bolts of fire and frost the Altmer shot after her. A quick incantation and a hand-gesture towards those who’d been slain caused a surge of blue energy to swarm into the bodies. Her spell complete, a wicked grin spread across Morrigan’s features as the dead elves limbs twitched and they rose to their feet, eyes milk white and blue light erupting from their mouths as if their throats were alight.
She could feel several powerful dispelling enchantments strike against her new friends, but her bindings held and the terrified looks the guards had showed more than words ever will as their unloving compatriots fell upon them in a clash of magical steel.
Diving from cover, Morrigan lost sight of Vex as the battle commenced. An elf ran for her, screaming some oath in his native tongue, his sword-strikes clumsy and unpracticed.
Swinging to high, she ducked underneath the blow, catching the elf by the wrist, she twisted the sword from his grip; slamming it into his chest. There was a loud crunch as Morrigan’s vampiric strength propelled the blade through the elf’s chestplate, the golden metal dimpling under the force.
Blood gushed over her fingers, and Morrigan licked it from her nails, turning to face her next opponent…

she flinched as the lightning hit morrigan's ward, rolling to her left and back towards the natural cover she'd been amongst earlier. on her knees, vex continued to release arrow after arrow, thankful that she'd had the sense to fill her quiver before embarking from morrigan's home. even so, not even a hundred more arrows could have brought down the thalmor guards that swarmed towards them. after loosing her final arrow, vex drew her swords, their steel glinting almost eagerly in the light. it had been some time since they'd had some serious use, though vex knew from her regular training she had not gone rusty.
the few mer that were making their way towards her caused vex to pause before they were upon her. there weren't too many, obviously they thought vex's magic-wielding, vampire ally was the more dangerous, but that didn't offend vex in the slightest. truthfully, she was glad. morrigan hadn't hesitated to get her hands dirty, and vex admired that. the imperial wouldn't stop herself from doing the same.
and then she was fighting, the clang of metal meeting in the air filling vex's head until everything else around her seemed to go numb. There was nothing except the thalmor before her. vex's face settled into a grim expression as she attempted to fend them off. they kept coming, crawling from some hole, leaving no time to wonder what had become of morrigan.
slaying one, a cry erupted from vex's lips as she felt one of their swords drag across her forearm. it was little more than a scratch, but it only incensed vex more. slicing at the attacker with focused precision, vex had to smile as she forced him to drop his sword as a thin red line opened at his neck. they collapsed, joining their comrades on the ground that vex had already dispatched of.
but the thief knew she probably wouldn't last too much longer. it was encouraging to see not many thalmor heading her way, and so far she had been lucky that they'd seemed to spend the majority of their mages on morrigan. but even as that thought ran through her head, a stream of flames headed her way. rolling to her right, out of the range, vex swore under her breath. sweat beaded across her forehead at the heat, and she knew she'd have to keep an eye on the mage that had sent them her way. the brightness of the flames had her momentarily blind, but still vex slashed, grunting with satisfaction as she cut the legs out from under one of the soldiers. blinking rapidly to adjust her eyes to the dark yet again, vex didn't have much opportunity to rest before more thalmor were upon her.

Another moment is another eternity Their numbers were thinning, though not nearly as quickly as Morrigan would’ve liked, it was still progress. She could see Vex, fighting hard against the mer that attacked her and doing better than Morrigan would’ve thought.
She really is quite good in a fight, for a thief. Warding a bolt of frosty energy, it was rare for Morrigan to feel so taxed and in a strange way, it was a liberating thing. Each spell deflected, each sword swing dodged, each elf eviscerated. She hadn’t felt so alive in years.
Her fingers grew hot with her spell, crackling with electrical energy before bursting forth like the fury of Kynareth herself. The bolt hit the elf straight in the chest, but lightning was a pervasive, uncontrollable force and his attempts to ward the spell away failed.
The air was filled with a sickly concoction of burning air, cindering skin and melting eyes. His golden platemail blackened and rusted into fiery ash underneath her spell before collapsing to the ground, no more than a smoking piece of burnt meat.
Several more spells ended in the same way, with Thalmor crumpling into hot slabs of charcoal, but Morrigan was beginning to feel the tax of so much powerful magic in so little time. She wouldn’t overcast herself, she was too experienced for that, but she knew she’d have to mindful from now on while on this little adventure.
Having felled another elf, she turned and attempted to dodge but there wasn’t enough space and Morrigan cursed her height. The blade’s point slammed into her stomach, sliding through her flesh like she was made of paper.
A scream of agony thundered in the air. Blood sprayed from her mouth and nose and simultaneously, Morrigan began to change. Skin darkened into a greyish cerulean, her eyes flared to life as burning embers. Her nails became grisly claws, her jaw distended and animalistic fangs dripped from her gums. Her pale hair turned ever more white as her deathless curse took over her physical shell.
The elf who’d run her through stood paralyzed, rooted to the spot by either fear or arrogant bravery, she didn’t know. His death was a messy affair.
Her talons slammed hard into his face, thumbs dug into his eyes; each to the knuckle. A horrendous scream that became a wailing cry gurgled from his mouth along with an eruption of blood. A pull in each direction, and his head came apart right down the middle, cleaved in two from crown to the hollow of his throat.
The corpse dropped limply from the grip of the blade and a roar of pain came from Morrigan as she pulled the elven metal from her abdomen. Her alternate body allowed for the wound to heal nigh-instantly but even that caused a shudder of searing torment to pass through her. She didn’t know when she’d lost her footing and gone to her knees, but she quickly regained her ground, one hand holding the brutal wound.
The Thalmor were losing it and they knew it. Piece by piece, the force they had amassed began fleeing from the ruin or retreating back to the ruin, but even still, Vex and the few Morrigan had reanimated were gaining ground.
It was like the wind was knocked out of her as her body shifted back to its more natural form. Shuddering with the pain, Morrigan once again fell to her knees, the snow beneath her hands somewhat melted and icy cold. She lifted it to her mouth, drinking a small amount in to disperse the feeling of cotton mouth.
The last of the Thalmor dropped to the ground, his head flying from his shoulders, though Morrigan was unsure if it was Vex’s doing or one of her reanimated corpses. But either way, Morrigan knew she was going to need a touch of help here. “Vex…Vex…” She called out, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.
“Could you help me get too one of these bodies, I’ll fine once I’ve got some blood in my system.”

a light cut to her already bleeding forearm sent vex into a rage, her sword swinging to embed itself in the armor of one of the thalmor. it took a minute to tear it free, while she sliced through with the other, hitting the gap between the elf's breastplate and the material underneath. she was surprised no one had attacked her from behind when she was so vulnerable, and grateful for the fact that the pesky mage seemed to have turned his attention elsewhere. and that was when she saw the monstrosity that held the majority of the thalmor's attention.
details were hard to make out in the dim light and the thick of battle, but even at a distance, vex could tell it was wicked. cruelness seemed to emanate from the beast, rooting everyone in the near vicinity to the ground. vex stood transfixed by it for a moment, saw it attack the soldier in front of her, her eyes widening at the brutality. she felt.. fear, tons of it, but at the same time, realization came to her that, at least where she was standing, she was safe from it. for now, anyway. it had to be morrigan, vex knew, but she just hoped that this new, terrible morrigan had some control. mercer frey wouldn't take kindly to one of his best being ripped apart by an employer. vex knew tensions were tight enough between the pair of them without adding a thief's death into the mix.
though awe had her grounded for nearly two full seconds, enough time to die in battle, vex reacted quickly to the sword swung at her head. the flash of steel was enough notice to lift her own, sliding it along the length of the thalmor soldier's and dealing him a swift blow to his arm. another cut and he was felled, left to die with the others. she was so used to the awful sound of death that she couldn't even hear their groans of pain anymore.
by that point, vex was tiring and quickly. adrenalin still flooded through her, but it wasn't enough to keep the fatigue out of her limbs. stepping rather gracefully over the bodies she, morrigan and the dead under the witch's control, vex gladly took a backseat, watching the animated dead finish the job ahead of her while she hung back. the solitary crazed thalmor that made it towards her got off lightly. he was unarmed, and vex almost felt pity for him. the cut to his throat put him out of his misery. when he fell, vex quickly scanned around her for other potential threats, before leaning down to wipe her swords on the cloth he wore. the entire time she was cleaning, vex kept herself from looking at his face. she was no killer, and took no pride in the lives she had ended, though the imperial couldn't deny it was oddly empowering. but she was a thief, and she desperately hoped she wouldn't have to take part in such slaughter again. she'd stick to her shadows.
rising to her feet again, she blew the few unruly strands of blonde hair out of her face. the battle was clearly done, so vex sheathed a sword, the other remaining in her hand just in case. blood was in her head, though as she lifted a hand to it, vex could tell it was not her own. her limbs ached from overuse, but she felt so alive. stepping through across bodies of dead mer, vex felt her forearm bleed, but judged it to be only a couple of well placed scratches. still, if morrigan had it in her, being patched up couldn't hurt.
as if hearing her thoughts, vex heard morrigan's voice calling her name. her head turning towards the sound, vex increased her pace, knowing it had to be her companion. she was surprised to see morrigan in such a state, but the thief managed to keep that from showing in her face. the woman clearly needed help, and vex was obliged to give it.
sheathing her sword, vex got to her knees, taking a moment to judge where to wrap her arms around the taller woman in order to aid her without injuring her further. eventually, she decided around the waist would have to do, draping morrigan's arm over her shoulder's. vex grunted with the weight on her already sore legs, but thankfully the nearest body that vex assumed held a sufficient amount of blood was not too far away. despite the fact vex had no idea about how much blood morrigan would need, this particular body didn't seem to be surrounded by dark snow as much as some of his fallen comrades. yes, this mer would have to do.
slowly, she lowered morrigan to him. "there. eat up." at that point, vex couldn't keep the disgust out of her voice. she was too tired, and although it wasn't the first feeding she had witnessed, she averted her eyes. her thoughts flickered back to the ratway, the vampire leaned over his victim. even then, she hadn't seen any of the details, but in her stomach she felt sick. she didn't want any part of it. "let me know when you're done." she informed morrigan, her eyes fixed on the sky as she stood by rather uncomfortably. she felt exhausted, enough to crawl back to riften and curl up in her bed in the flagon. but vex would not leave the job unfinished. it was hard to believe that their night had only just begun.
