ardan had woken early for no particular reason at all. usually his superiors would give him some duties to be going on with, but they did no such thing. ardan was left to break his fast in almost complete solitude, bar the few other early risers. it was nice, enjoying the quiet without the younger apprentices around. of course, there was also the bonus of not having to worry about one of the complete newbies setting his robe on fire, as had happened to a fellow apprentice last week. it had been put out quickly enough, but being singed was a bad start to any morning.
with nothing else to do, ardan found himself wandering around the college. he knew almost every detail of the college, from the number of steps from one room to another, to how many bolts there were in each door. he had been at the college so long, and ardan found it's walls both frustrating and comforting. on one hand, it was his home, and had been for several years. on the other, ardan was sick of seeing it. everyday he saw the same people, did the same things. if he didn't know better, he'd say it was holding him back. more than anything, ardan wanted to leave. so many of the friends he had made during his time at the college had received offers to move on to other positions in skyrim, and even cyrodiil, and ardan couldn't help but envy them. he had been told time and time again that his chance would come to leave, or at least progress upwards through the college's ranks, but ardan was still officially just an apprentice. a senior apprentice, sure, but an apprentice all the same.
before he knew it, ardan found himself outside the college's library. it had been one of the few places he'd come to truly love about the college and was where he had spent the majority of his time in the first few years of his apprenticeship. he'd been so intent on proving himself worthy and ardan had been sure that spending his hours studying was the way to go about it. he'd learned much from the books, even some old spells his masters had neglected to mention in classes, but other than that, there was nothing. no big secret on how to be the best mage you could. at first ardan had assumed that there must be other books containing more powerful spells hidden away, but upon further inspection there was none. it had taken ardan years to get over the fact that he had just been wrong.
now, however, the library was just a place to relax. ardan didn't know how many books he'd actually read within the college's walls, but he was certain there were hundreds more that he hadn't. which is why he spent a lot of downtime reading. history books were his favorite, and he immediately went to that section. his hand hovered over the spines carefully, before selecting one. brushing off the dust that had collected on the cover, ardan's lips curved into a smile when he saw the cover. 2920, Mid Year it read in faded script. Knowing he hadn't read it before, ardan took a seat in the corner, opened the cover gently and started thumbing through the book, his eyes running over each page in turn.
