Why lead when everybody sleeps? All she had to do was wait for Vex.
Tonilia glanced once more at the Jarl that was stalking around inside of the residence he called his own, before dropping down and waiting once more. Vex had said she would only be a moment checking out the back way, but that had been some time ago. Okay, so only about ten. Still, Tonilia was getting cagey about this whole thing. She wanted to start this heist as soon as she could. Sure, she liked the excitement of the job, but in the end, she really liked the septums more. The sooner they got a move on, the sooner they could get what they had come here for and get back to the Guild with it. Yet Tonilia was used to these situations, and so she settled with her arm against the side of the building and waited while she listened to the going on’s of the house. It sounded as if people were starting to settle down for bed. Perfect. It would be easy to slip in, gather whatever they wanted, and slip back out.
Still, she waited for Vex to return and update her on the back. Despite her own years in the Guild, Tonilia let Vex have the lead. If she didn’t respect anyone else, she did respect Vex, the woman who had been her mentor. When she had been taken to the Guild, she hadn’t been much more than a snot nosed kid. A snot nosed kid with cunning rare for one’s age, but a kid nonetheless. Years of Vex’s training had taken her to where she was today. Perhaps she didn’t have as much respect for jobs as did Vex or Brynjolf, but she knew her stuff, and the rest knew that as well.
It was more than head knowledge, this game. It was much more than that. No, it included way more. It was your enthusiasm, your zeal. She had that zeal for thievery and that made her good at it. It’s what classified them all though. Anyone could be a common thief and steal a few trinkets here and there. Maybe you could even get a name for yourself. But that didn’t make you good enough for the Guild. And for that reason, Tonilia was proud.
But there were much bigger things than thinking about the past now. Rising up once more, Tonilia flickered her nearly black eyes across the inside of the Jarl’s residence once more. Only the Jarl himself remained up, everyone else having gone to bed now. Good. Soon enough he would follow and sleep would take him over as well. And after that…
Well, he’d be missing few precious items when the sun rose in the sky. Foolish men, thinking that guards would keep them safe and free from harm. Perhaps they even thought they were safe so far from Riften and the rumor of the Guild. A smirk worked its way up on her lips before she watched the Jarl himself retire to his bedroom. Where was Vex? They would only have to wait a few more minutes until they could enter the Jarl’s residence. Wouldn’t he be saddened when his golden underwear had been taken right out from under his nose?

But it was all the more brilliant because of it.
Winterhold's Jarl wasn't the most powerful of the lot, in fact Vex had heard many of the other Jarl's disregarded his opinion on most matters considering Winterhold was nowhere near as grand or strong as many of the other cities dotted around Skyrim. Upon arriving in Winterhold, Vex could see why. A few buildings, most with thatched roofs, and a tavern was all the town was comprised of. And of course, there was the College. Never being much of a fan of magic, the College of Winterhold held no interest for Vex. Not nearly so much as the Jarl's Longhouse that stood at the end of the town.
What they'd find inside, Vex had no idea. Doing a clean sweep of the place had seemed like the best idea, and as such, bringing Tonilia along was a good plan. While Vex had an eye for gold, Tonilia, as the Guild's fence, always seemed to be able to estimate how much things are worth. A dull tapestry that Vex might look over might turn out to be worth thousands of septims. And Tonilia was the one who would tell her so.
Unfortunately, even though the Longhouse wasn't nearly as impressive as either Dragonsreach or Mistveil Keep, it was still rather well guarded. Vex had left Tonilia's side to check out the back entrance, wondering whether it could be a possible escape route if the two women ran into trouble. There were guards posted there, but they were seated, playing some card game. At the sight, Vex's lips curved into a lopsided smirk. Perfect. Nothing made her night like inattentive guards.
However, Vex was banking on a completely unguarded exit plan. Although she should have really returned to Tonilia immediately, Vex circled around the building more, finding a side door. Sticking close to the wall, Vex peered between the gap between the door and its frame. She couldn't see much, but the smell that hit her nose made her realize it was a larder, no doubt leading through to the kitchen. It was certainly something to consider.
Taking care to avoid the guards at the back, Vex made her way back to where Tonilia was waiting for her. "The back's watched, but the guards are playing cards." she informed her companion, not even bothering with an apology. "But there's a door, around the other side. I think it's a larder, and there's no one watching. We'd just have to duck through the kitchens." Her voice was hushed, and by the end of her explanation, Vex was grinning. This was the part of her job she loved, and she was glad to have Tonilia accompany her. It was just like old times.
"How are we on the inside?" Vex asked, wondering what Tonilia could see of it. She'd take a look herself, but if anyone happened to be watching either of them, no doubt it would look suspicious. Vex didn't want to call any unwanted attention to their selves until after the job was done. |

Tonilia wrinkled her nose while she watched the Jarl stretch, scratch at the beard on his chin, and yawn louder than a saber cat. As far as she was concerned, simply by watching him for a short time she realized that he was everything that she despised. He was loud, stupid, and didn’t seem to have any fear of anything happening to him. Jarls were mostly like that, she had figured out. At least when it came to thinking nothing could touch them from their Jarls quarters. Unfortunately for them but fortunately for her and Vex, they were touchable. The next few minutes would show them that for real. All they had to do now was wait a small amount of time for the Jarl to drag his loud self to bed and allow them the time to clean him out. Together they could do it. If Vex ever got back. Tonilia simply didn’t think about that though, and instead focused on the Jarl. From her position, she could peek through a window by her to track the progress. And quickly enough he did cross over the residence and go into his bedroom. Tonilia softly grunted in pleasure.
A few minutes later Vex showed up. Despite her friend and mentor being light on her feet and nearly impossible to hear, Tonilia knew she was there. Almost as if she could sense her from working together to much. Without turning her head, Tonilia listened to her explanation of the situation around the back and wondered at what they were going to do about it. The decision seemed obvious to her. Though they probably could waltz right by the guards without them having any idea that they were doing so, it was also very good to have an assurance that you could for sure pull off a job. And with the second way Vex mentioned, they should be able to go through without any problem whatsoever.
“Sounds like we’re going through the larder then.”, she commented without thinking about it anymore. As much as she liked being daring and pulling off those ‘impossible’ heists, Tonilia was in no mood to do anything but get in there, get their things and get back out. The larder would work just fine for that obviously, and the dark haired Redguard would be more than happy to be out of here as soon as possible.
“The Jarl laid down about five minutes ago, if not a few more. He’d been drowsy since I started watching him. Everyone else of importance was already asleep.” Shifting lightly, she gestured inside with a flick of her wrist. “We should be completely in the clear if we go in through the larder, because that big oaf will be dead to the world by now, I guarantee it.” Tonilia felt like rolling her eyes again when she thought of the Nord that seemed to think he could rule the city by scratching his belly and yawning. Some specimen. “We can go now and be in quickly. Just lead the way.”

Of course, there'd be more excitement involved if they tried to slip past the guards, but there was also much more risk of being caught. And while the Imperial loved messing with people's heads, this job was supposed to be in-and-out. If either of the women got caught, there'd be serious repercussions. And Vex rather fancied keeping her freedom for a few more years before being caught thieving from a Jarl.
Vex listened intently as she listened to the Redguard inform her of the going ons within the longhouse. Her lips lifted into a smirk when Tonilia referred to the Jarl as an oaf, though her focus didn't waver. From what Tonilia said, it seemed this job would be easier than Vex had realized. But she tried not to let it go to her head. The last time Vex had been overconfident about a job, she'd been cut open by some stroke of bad luck. Just at the thought, Vex's mouth curved downward. This would not be a repeat of Goldenglow.
Another nod and Vex did as Tonilia instructed. On jobs, there were no leaders. Thieves had to work as a team on the rare occasions they worked with a partner. And while Vex had to admit she rather preferred working solo, Tonilia was one of her few fellow thieves that didn't make Vex want to rip her hair out in frustration. Of course, Vex liked to think that it was her guidance that had made Tonilia bearable, but there was something in the Redguard that Vex admired. She was strong, and that was something Vex always liked to see in other women. It didn't make her like them anymore, but it was a good trait to possess.
In no time at all, the two women had circled around to the larder door. There was no handle, but doors had never proven to be a problem for the Imperial. "Let's hope the kitchen staff are asleep." Vex muttered, her fingers working at the gap between the door and wall to prise the door open. It took quite a pull for it to even budge, but eventually, Vex managed to pull it open silently. It hadn't even been locked. Opening it gradually in case the wood creaked, Vex saw that inside was very dark compared to the snow covered landscape outside. Entering silently, Vex blinked a few times, trying to adjust her eyes as quickly as possible to the dark. A blind thief was as good as a dead thief, and Vex planned on making it out of the longhouse alive. She spied the larder's exit on the other side of the room, and took note that it was also without a lock. Did these people purposefully make it so easy for them?
When Tonilia had entered, Vex shut the door behind her, turning to the Redguard in the now almost complete dark. But she could make out the form of the Redguard in the gloom and Vex's eyes settled on where she assumed her partner's face was. "So we're on the western most side of the longhouse. I think the quarters are on the east, closer to where we were standing outside." She waited for Tonilia to counter the statement, in case she'd learned something else during her surveillance. "I'm assuming everything of value is in his bedroom, because their security is so lax. But I want to do a sweep just in case." Her voice was hushed, but a noise outside made Vex freeze. As she listened, it was clear the source of it was outside in the town, judging from the drunken shouting. Vex fought the urge to roll her eyes. Now was not the time to dwell on how stupid men could be. She had a job to do.

Right after she saw that, she lifted her brow and turned her gaze from the door over toward Vex and then back again. Well wasn’t that interesting, a door with no handle. Obviously this was a job for Vex. Tonilia was better than decent herself in the art of opening doors, but Vex was better at it, and Tonilia had never volunteered for this sort of job if she didn’t have to do it. The patience was the problem here, and while she had more patience than the average person, she also hadn’t ever claimed that it was a strong quality that she possessed. Biding her time and hiding her emotions? Sure, but actual patience didn’t quite fit in there.
Her whispered words caused Tonilia to shift in place a little bit. “Knowing the Nords, they’re all probably passed out from drinking too much mead on a full belly.”, she whispered back. Tonilia had a bit of contempt for many of the Nords that inhabited Skyrim. They were big, she’d give them that, but aside from that…eeeh. To her, they were all brawn and absolutely no brain. To a thief, that was just about as unflattering of a way you could possibly be. Thus the contempt. Despite that, Tonilia did realize that there were plenty of Nords in the Guild that could hold their own – such as Brynjolf and Sapphire, but they were special cases as far as she was concerned.
While Vex worked on the door, Tonilia kept a sharp lookout behind them, her nearly black eyes skittering here and there to make sure no guards were lurking. That nearly made her snort as well. The guards were just about worthless in her mind as well. They walked up and down the towns or cities, hardly ever getting any action. What did they do, hold down the towns? She did have to admit though, if they all grouped together they could be a potential problem, so it was best just to stay away from the guards and leave it be at that.
And they were in! Tonilia scanned the sleepy town once more before turning and following Vex inside the dark house, which was like wandering around underneath ground with how dark it was inside. Blinking rapidly, Tonilia tried to quicken getting used to the dark. Fortunately for her it happened rather quickly, and she noticed at the same time Vex did that the door was without a lock as well. Typical Jarl – thinking himself invincible. Well whatever, if he wanted to pretend that his pathetic little guards could protect him, easier for them.
Vex turned to confirm the layout of the house and Tonilia found herself nodding along. “The actual bed of the Jarl is pushed along the eastern wall, so we don’t have to worry much about that. As for things of value, if you think it might be worth something and doesn’t take up too much arm space, grab it. I’ll assess it to see if it’s worth anything extra than you might think.” Tonilia hadn’t been a fence for so long without noticing the value of certain objects. The shouting made her freeze at the same time, her eyes rolling to the side, her hand resting on her scimitar blade in case this didn’t go quite as planned. Tonilia wasn’t a murderer, but she would defend herself if she needed to.
Soon it became evident that it was nothing more than a stupid drunk. Nodding in agreement at Vex’s soft voice, Tonilia let her hand drop off the handle of her blade and on nearly silent feet stepped further inside the house. Despite thinking that Vex was right and that there was plenty of value in the Jarl’s room, Tonilia thought that there might also be other things of value scattered around the house. Dark eyes wandered here and there while she looked around. The first thing she came into contact with was a simple display piece with a few different items on it. On closer observation however, Tonilia realized the items on this display were more than simple pieces of beauty. Soon enough they were being placed in her bag to take with her before she moved onto the next thing.

The fact that it was probably true amused Vex all the more. Nords were far too fond of mead, and while Vex herself wouldn't say it was a bad drink, loving it the way Nords did was just.. humourous. She doubted any other races were so addicted to a drink the way Nords were, and any slights against Skyrim's provincial beverage were taken very personally. It was just plain ridiculous.
Vex's head bobbed, drinking in the extra information Tonilia gave her as she listened. The Redguard thief had certainly done her research, and for that, Vex was grateful. She was sick to death of working with rookies who relied far too much on Vex to get the job done. Partnerships were supposed to be equal, and Tonilia was perhaps one of the few members of the Guild that Vex would believe to be something of an equal. If not in thieving ability, then certainly in determination and cunning. The fact that Tonilia had an eye for unusual things of worth was just an added bonus.
After recovering from the shock of loud shouting coming from outside, Vex didn't take long to spur herself back into action. Stepping out of the larder, Vex found herself in the kitchen. It didn't take her long to determine that nothing in front of her was worth anything of value, and although by the sound of things, Tonilia had managed to find a few pretty pieces, nothing immediately caught Vex's eye. She was pleased to find that it was deserted, no trace of the servants who must have normally worked there to be seen. Vex allowed herself to smile at that. Wherever they were, they'd better stay there for the duration of the thieves' visit. If they got in between Vex and her exit route, they'd stand no chance.
The kitchen led onto the dining hall, which Vex surveyed for only a moment. The servingware had been left out, the silver glinting in the low light the dying torches gave out from their positions on the wall. "Are these worth taking?" Vex asked Tonilia, lifting a silver plate up. In the light, the Imperial was just able to make out her warped reflection in the silver, and unable to hide her amusement, she grinned. The problem was that there were so many of the silver plates, and Vex wasn't even sure how much they would be worth a piece. The fact that she had always been far more fond of gold certainly didn't help. The thought of the more valuable yellow metal made Vex put the plate down, suddenly put off by it. There were better things to be found within the longhouse, and Vex wasn't going to settle for mere silver.
Moving along the table towards the end that must have been where the Jarl sat, Vex's eye was quickly caught by another piece of diningware. The Jarl's large seat loomed over the benches along the sides, but what caught Vex's attention was the goblet in front of it. Gold, and set with what looked like a sapphire, Vex took a moment to admire it before lifting it from it's place.
It was beautiful. Turning it over in her hands, Vex quickly determined it was definitely real gold, and from what she knew of Winterhold's Jarl, he was not the type to flaunt a fake sapphire in his court. Pleased with her find, Vex placed it in the bag slung over her shoulders, her eyes searching for her companion once she had done so. "Ready to move on?" Vex asked, not knowing if her friend had managed to find something worth picking up. The Imperial had been so absorbed in her own search, it was hard to keep an eye on Tonilia at the same time. |

Tonilia gave Vex a knowing look when she heard the low bout of amusement from the other woman. She herself thought the nords a somewhat stupid race. There were exceptions to that rule of course, as with everything, but as a whole she had never been impressed to the brain to brawn ratio that they seemed to possess…and proudly so oddly enough. Perhaps that was something that Tonilia would never understand, and perhaps she never would want to do so. She simply left it as a mutual understanding of what she had been talking about, however, and made no further comment on that particular subject. Not only did they have more important information to get to, but there was no reason to go on thinking or talking about the nords and their weird behaviors.
Tonilia started instead to explain a few different things to Vex about what she would want to look for. Vex was always a woman that you would want on a contract to get things down, but none aside from maybe Delvin actually did the homework on what was worth what. Tonilia did, and took pride in the fact that she actually did so. No one was as good as she was at estimating the value of certain things, and so she knew her own worth on that subject. Vex was one that didn’t seem to have any problems actually asking Tonilia for advice, which was somewhat rare, since most wanted to think they were as good as she was. Later they would usually figure out that they had heisted worthless items and left the real treasures behind. She couldn’t help but make comments in those situations.
Finally they split up to take their spoils. She almost immediately found something of value in the display case…or in front of it rather. They were being placed in her bag even as she glanced up and peered into the actual display case. That one was locked however. Retrieving her dagger and a lockpick, she had just reached forward to unlock the display case when her partner appeared at her side with a few objects. Lying her tools down on the table top, she reached forward to grab at the silver that was handed to her. Turning in her hands, Tonilia narrowed her eyes while she studied it for a moment. It didn’t take her long to conclude that they were indeed worth enough to be troubled by. “Indeed. Not extremely pricey, but enough to make it worth your while.”, she commented softly.
And quickly then she made her way back to the display case and the treasure that seemed to be within it. It took her nearly no time at all before she had it opened and was pulling out the various items from inside the case. She had just finished putting them in her bag when Vex asked her if she was ready. Giving her partner a nod, she closed the display case and turned toward her. “Of course. And you?”
