Key Skills
+Sneak: Though several of Brynjolf's tactics as a member of the guild involve sleight of hand and distraction, he's nonetheless a stealthy thief through and through, able to lay low precisely when he needs to do so. One doesn't get into a respectable position in the thieves guild without knowing how to maintain subtlety and anonymity, after all.
+Light Armor: Brynjolf, like nearly all the members of the thieves guild, specializes in the quiet and light-dampening nature of lighter leather armors and never wears anything any heavier.
+Archery: Both having a bow in his hand from a fairly young age and the need on a guild mission occasionally for some ranged subtleties have trained Brynjolf to be a highly capable archer over time. While bows and crossbows are not his weapons of choice, he does know how to use them if the situation calls for such a need for a ranged weapon.
+One-Handed Weapons: Brynjolf prefers to use speedy daggers, both for silent take-downs and for any combat situation he unfortunately finds himself stuck in. He's especially adept at dual-wielding.
+Lockpicking: Brynjolf can't count how many locks he's had the opportunity to pick over the course of his life, but the number's probably getting up towards the ridiculous level. Obviously, he knows his way around them by now, perhaps too well.
+Pickpocketing: Another sign of a long career of thievery, Brynjolf knows how to grab an item off of the unaware better than most but not as well as some. Again, he relies on distraction quite a bit for this method of thievery.

Weapons, Armor, and Belongings
+Twin Daggers: Brynjolf carries a set of identical daggers on his person, underneath fine garb while in public and on his belt while in his thieves guild armor. They're both basic steel, but the best of their make he could get his hands on with his coin over time.
+Amulet of Articulation: An item that has the magical effect of making the wearer more persuasive to those around him or her. People speculate if the effect is real, but Brynjolf makes use of it nonetheless.
+Thieves Guild Armor: Like most members of the thieves guild, Brynjolf wears a light leather armor with very light protection in exchange for nearly complete silence of movement and agility.

Personality
As much as any member of the thieves guild, Brynjolf is a crafty bastard who knows when and where to apply pressure for his and the guild's benefit. Both clever and a skilled speaker, he can make any sort of proposition seem like a good one. In fact, he's a key recruiter of new members of the guild because he has a knack for appealing to the interests of specific individuals who happen to have a similar interest in gold and sliding underneath the thumb of the law. His manner balances the line between charm and very attractive dishonesty, but there's no doubt that people do get caught in the traps he lays with his charismatic touch. Brynjolf makes all sorts of ideas sound almost irresistibly appealing.
Strangely enough, considering Brynjolf is a thief, he has a strong sense of justice and, to a certain extent, of honor (if primarily honor among thieves). While the typical citizen of Skyrim may stereotype thieves as "bad people," Brynjolf doesn't seem to fit that mold so snugly. He'll sponsor a shakedown of any sort of business that's not paying their dues to the guild, yes, but Brynjolf believes that though the guild may be selfish with other people's money, they should never turn against themselves. He's also not an intrinsically cruel man by nature. Brynjolf keeps guild business as business and nothing more...unless someone crosses them, and if such a thing ever came about, aforementioned sense of justice would reveal itself. Though a criminal, Brynjolf is angered by crimes that betray trust.
Brynjolf, though, does have a leader's head - he's a steady hand for the guild when he needs to be and, aside from his charisma in relation to his work as a thief, he possesses a more calming, endearing side. Words of encouragement are not far from his tongue at any time, and he has a maturity that convinces others to listen to his small bits of advice. Brynjolf has no issues being the fatherly one around, and fits this role as well as any of the others the thieves guild requires of him.

History
Born to a mining Nord family of Skyrim, Brynjolf experienced a touch of the traditional Nord upbringing combined with the experiences of living in a mining town. In other words, the adventure he experienced was few and far between in the unchanging atmosphere of mining. His father tended to be an aloof man and spent much time in the mines. Brynjolf gained much of his experience in fighting and hunting from his mother, but again, her duties tied her most often to their home. Brynjolf was left to tag along behind the more interesting people of the town on most of the days he wasn't needed to help around the home, and it was due to this that Brynjolf first came into contact with the idea of thievery.
A visitor of his town - a Redguard who drew the whispers of its citizens - gathered Brynjolf's full and undivided attention. Brynjolf's attention to her for a few days and his persistence in keeping up with her despite the fact that she tried to avoid him caused her to eventually let him see what she was really in the town for - a robbery of the mansion of an important member of the town. In fact, she chose to involve Brynjolf in a small part of it. Allowing him to duck through a small passageway she couldn't fit in to unlock a door and rewarding him with some coin after the job was done with, the woman had introduced a bit of a more interesting life into Brynjolf's life. She left almost immediately after the robbery, and Brynjolf remained there, no one knowing he was remotely involved in the aftermath.
Brynjolf, though, saw fit to continue. A robbery here and there over the next few years went unnoticed. When Brynjolf was in his middle teens, though, his father died in a mining accident. He spent the next couple of years having to support the family himself by working the mine before his mother's brother moved back into town. It was then that Brynjolf saw fit for him to leave and head out further into Skyrim. He caught up, on a stroke of luck, on information involving the same Redguard that had visited him before. After two jobs he helped her perform went well, the third got Brynjolf thrown in jail while his companion was deported back to Hammerfell. It was around that time that the whispers of war were starting to brew in Skyrim, and Brynjolf spent several months in a dungeon before his bail was posted by the thieves guild.
Brynjolf accepted their offer to work with them, and he's been there ever since. With the advancement of time, he's become one of the individuals to hold a key to the guild vault as well as the guy who keeps his eyes open for potential new members of the guild.
