SKILLS & MAGIC .
Since he was a child Cynric has been a thief. Twenty years of practice have definitely benefited him in most of the thief skills. Cynric is very stealthy, moving silently as possible. He had never had trouble finding a shadow to disappear into when he has needed one. Through years of practice he can move almost invisibly behind guards and in or out of any building. Ric has yet to meet a lock that he could not pick. Having plenty of practice breaking out of jail cells through his time in High Rock, and on the occasional mission now, he would consider himself a master at this particular talent. Though he moved on to jailbreaking, he got his start pickpocketing. He finds it a useful skill still, though one he uses less often than the others.
If Cynric can finish a job without any fighting, he will. Combat has always been a last resort for him. Even in the Dark Brotherhood, he avoided killing anyone except for his target. When an issue cannot be resolved stealthily, Cynric prefers to use a bow and arrow. Archery is also helpful in making a distraction, shooting the opposite direction to draw attention there and clearing a path for him to sneak through. At close range he will use one handed weapons, mostly in the back. A Dagger or a sword being the most common. If caught unprepared, an ax or a mace will do the trick, though they are a very last resort.
Bretons are born with a penchant for Magic, and Cynric is no exception to the rule. He had been practicing with his assassin companions in High Rock before his unfortunate incident. Illusion is his best school. Spells for invisibility are his favorite. He also has some talent at Conjuration, bound weapons are a fantastic backup, and Restoration Magic. Though he avoids any physical fights, he likes knowing that if he were to injure himself he could at least patch himself up well enough to get back to the guild. He does know one fire spell, but has otherwise spent no time in the destruction school.
ARMOR & APPAREL .
Cynric favors light armors, as most thieves do. He wears his thieves guild armor most days. He does also own a set of red and black Dark Brotherhood armor from his time with that guild, it rarely comes out of the chest he keeps at the cistern. When not on a job, out in Riften or any other city where the guards can readily see, he prefers civilian clothes. Cynric always wears an amulet of Arkay, though has been rather vague about where he acquired the piece.
WEAPONS & EQUIPMENT .
The one thing that Cynric is absolutely never without is a lockpick. Lockpicks are his lifeline. He uses them far more than he does any weapon or any other tool. Though he carries many, he only really needs one. He so rarely breaks them, one can last him quite a while. Even so, he has a bit of a hoarding problem when it comes to them. His chest in the cistern has more than he will likely need in his lifetime, but he cannot stop himself from adding more every chance he gets. For weapons, Cynric uses a plain hunting bow and steel arrows. He always has a small steel dagger on one hip, though he refrains from taking it out of its sheath very often.
STORY .
Cynric was born the son of a peasant family living in Evermor. His father was a struggling bard, and though his mother tried to be supportive, she ended up leaving her husband and their two sons when she could no longer take it. His father always told the boys that she was killed by bandits, but Cynric is unsure if this is true or not. At a young age, Cynric and his brother Cyrill learned that their options were to be destitute peasants for the rest of their lives or become thieves. The two boys started young picking pockets when they could as a team. Cyrill would distract a target while Cynric stole their coin purse. They only ever stole from the merchants who looked like they made plenty and the nobles. As children they stuck to pickpocketing, but as they grew into adolescence they began breaking into the noble houses and stealing whatever looked valuable. They were always able to find someone willing to fence for them.
The breton was only fifteen the first time he found himself in the Evermor jail. He had broken into one of the Noble’s houses. They had hit it before, but the wealthy nobles were always getting new pretty gifts for their wives and daughters. This Noble had a particularly lovely daughter, who happened to be in their home when Cynric broke in. She would have let him go, but being fifteen he made a bad decision. Her father returned and caught them in a rather compromising position, and had Cynric thrown in jail. He hid one lockpick on himself, and used it to break out, and slipped past the guards unnoticed. Not a month later he found himself in a similar situation, and once again escaped. Word that he was impossible to imprison began to spread, mostly due to his brother’s insistence on telling anyone who would listen that his brother could break out of any jail cell.
Just after his sixteenth spring, he received a letter from one of the noble families from Farrun, whose son had been imprisoned falsely. She begged Cynric to get caught and break out her son. From there it was a rapid succession of imprisonments and breakouts, each adventure more daring than the last. His brother spread the word, and arranged with the clients, Cynric committed obvious crimes and was placed into jail, only to break out with an item or person held by the guards. His brother began receiving letters from Hammerfell as well. It was from there that his first request to murder a target came. He had refrained from killing anyone in his previous thieving attempts, never so much as scratching a guard. On Cyrill’s insistence that he do so, Cynric complete the assignment and was rewarded handsomely.
A few days later he received a letter with a Black handprint and the words “We Know” beneath it. Thus Cynric founds himself drawn into the Dark Brotherhood. He enjoyed killing for contract much less than he did jailbreaking, and he kept with his old business as well. He stayed with the dark brotherhood for three years before he was captured by the guards after an assassination in Northpoint. Having been captured and escaping from Northpoint multiple times, the guards finally became smart and put him in a more secure cell, in which he was shackled and under constant guard. He stayed there for three years, the worst three years of his life before Cyrill managed to stage a breakout. During the time that he was in prison the High Rock sanctuary had fallen. Realising that being a well know jailbreaker had outlived its purpose and with no Dark Brotherhood ties left in High Rock Cynric and Cyrill traveled over into Skyrim. Joining the Dark Brotherhood family in Falkreath.
Cyrill, who had encouraged his brother at first, took issue with a few of the jobs that Cynric was taking with the Dark Brotherhood. The two brothers parted ways and have hardly kept in touch since then. On a job in Riften he was recruited into the thieves guild by Mercer Frey. For a while he ran jobs for both the Dark Brotherhood and for the Thieves Guild, but the thieves guild jobs were easier for him and did not involve murder. So he lessened his association with the Brotherhood. He will occasionally take the odd job from the Brotherhood, when they require his talents, but he aligns himself with the Thieves guild instead. He has been quite happy in Skyrim, but occasionally gets homesick for High Rock. Being surrounded by Nords is not a pracitulalry charming time, but he tries to make the best of it.
