[style=width: 370px; background-color:#a3a3b9; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; padding: 15px; color: #cccccc;]I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE violet had risen early that morning. being on the road was losing it's novelty, even if travelling was something she had wanted to do her entire life. it was worse since her mother had left with two guards to ride ahead to riften. apparently it was only a day's ride away, and the lady had to meet with the jarl urgently. it wasn't that violet didn't like her guards, but they were a bit dull. they rode in almost silence after violet's attempts to maintain a conversation failed time after time, and she spent her time looking at the scenery around her. at least that wasn't boring.
it was so different from the climate at home, that violet was in constant awe. flowers, grass, trees... everything was so green! it was warmer in the rift too, so much more so than at home. she'd felt the temperature slowly increase as they moved south, until she didn't need her furs to keep her warm at night. her heavier cloaks lay discarded in one of her bags, and violet was happy travelling in one of her light shift dresses. the only downside was her thighs were particularly sore after rubbing against her saddle all day.
but that was nothing compared to the anxiety the young nord felt. in riften was a potential suitor, and if her mother approved of the match, he would be her future husband. love didn't even enter the equation. he could be anybody, anything, and violet would have no choice but to marry him. she supposed the rift wouldn't be such a bad place to live, but the landscape and climate were the least of her worries; she was to meet her partner for the rest of her life. she was going to be a wife, to bear his children.
suddenly, violet froze, and her steed, nymeria, halted, feeling the sudden tension from her rider. "something wrong, m'lady?" one of her guards asked kindly, though violet knew he probably just wanted to get as far as they could that afternoon. she shook her head slowly, feeling foolish. getting all worked up at the idea of bearing children. it was something her mother had prepared her for, but she couldn't even imagine doing so, even if it was her wifely duty. "i just..." violet started, wanting nothing more to ride home and hide under her bed covers. but that was impossible, so she did the next best thing: stalling. "it's the heat, i think i need a rest." before anyone could protest, she dismounted, leading her horse to the side of the road and under the trees. she was handed a waterskin, and she drank deeply, relishly the coolness of the water on her throat. she watched as her men and a couple of her handmaidens settled around her, eating, drinking, chatting. everything seemed so much more alive than when they were moving, but still violet felt alone.
"m'lady, there's someone coming up the road." one of her guards informed her. he sounded a little apprehensive, as if they should move away from the road. they had basically settled right next to the main route into riften. but considering they had run into no trouble thus far, violet waved it off. "how many?" she asked, and when the guard answered that there was only one, violet knew there was nothing to be afraid of. "let them come. they may have news of my mother." violet knew her party outnumbered the sole traveller, and if they were coming from riften, no doubt he would have heard if the lady arroway had arrived safely.
moving closer to the road, violet stood with her guards and watched the person approach. it was hard to tell from such a distance, but he looked like a solider of some description. or violet's guards told her as much. but as he drew nearer, violet watched, wondering who this stranger was. she made up a million different stories as he got closer, that he was a suitor, that he had just killed a dragon, that he was sent by the jarl to escort them back. but when he was thirty or so feet away, all those stories were pushed aside. she knew this person, and a grin slowly spread across her face. suddenly, she bolted forward.
"lady violet!" one of the guards called, trying to grab for the running girl, but violet was too fast. she had already closed half the distance before anyone began to chase her. no doubt they thought she was crazy, running to a stranger like she was. but she knew this stranger, and wasn't afraid to sprint until she was only a couple feet away from them. "gods, iain, is it really you?" she asked, but now she was close enough to see him, there was no doubt of it. it was her brother, who violet hadn't seen in a long time. without waiting for an answer, she ran into him, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug. before she knew it, tears of joy were running down her face. she let go of him when she heard her guards approach, weapons drawn. violet only laughed and waved them off. "lower your weapons. it's my brother." surely, they remembered him. he was a little rougher than vi remembered, but he was still the same. right?

Iain walked slowly, his eyes searching the area as he made his way down the trail from Riften. He didn’t figure that he had to worry about the Imperial army so deep in the heart of Stormcloak territory, but one could never be sure. If there was anything he knew, it was that the Imperial’s were a trickier lot than most of the Nords gave them credit for. His time with the army as a scout had changed him somewhat. Though he was still hotheaded, he had become better at controlling his emotions. One couldn’t just go throwing a fit about something when they were in the army. Every action, every decision effected those around you, and he wouldn’t be the one to potentially get a fellow Stormcloak killed because of foolishness. He’d gotten a man injured because he’d rashly ran into battle once…never again.
Now he had been sent up the path of Riften toward the city of Whiterun to scout out an Imperial camp that the Stormcloak’s had gotten wind of between Ivarstead and Whiterun. That was getting closer to home than they liked, and so they had sent him, though he had last been stationed in Riften. He had grabbed his stallion and had headed out quickly, well rested and ready for an assignment. He had the energy and desire to move, not rot away in one location for too long. Besides, if he sat too long, he began to think more about his family…and that led him to think about his sister and her plight right now. Damn it, he shouldn’t have left her. Perhaps he could have talked his mule headed father out of making her marry someone she didn’t know or give a damn about if he had stayed. Here he was, with his own freedom, and he had left her to rot in her own pool of doubts and worries, alone without anyone else that seemed to care that she didn’t want to simply marry a man she didn’t care about. Or…he assumed she didn’t want to. He sure wouldn’t want to if he was her.
He wished he knew where she was anyway, so he could contact her. He’d written her another letter recently, but he had no guarantee that she would get it, if she ever got it, which was highly unlikely. “What are we gonna do Zavier?”, he asked his stallion offhand, glancing over at the stallion that walked beside him faithfully. He was looking for a certain type of berry that a friend needed for their alchemy business, and so he was walking beside his stallion rather than on its back. As soon as he spoke, instantly he got a snort from the horse that had been his constant companion for the last four years, raised from a colt with his own hand. It was really one of his only connection with his previous life out here in the wilds. “Yeah yeah, I don’t know either, but this sure isn’t it.” How had he gotten to the point of talking to his stallion so much anyway? This job as a scout must have warped his mind a little bit.
Woah…it really must be warping his mind. For a minute there he’d thought that he’d heard someone call for his sister. Shaking his head, he lifted his eyes from the constant search along the roadside to see someone bolting toward him. With widened eyes, Iain stopped abruptly, his stallion doing the same even as he stared at the beautiful figure flying toward him. “Talos…is that you Vi?!” He had no time to set himself before she was in his arms. His gaze had settled on the guards running toward them, weapons drawn. Instantly he felt like brushing Violet behind him and guarding her from any sort of attack, and his brow furrowed. He was glad that she had told them to lower their weapons, or he might have stuck a sword into their gullets before they made any further yardage. After he determined there was no threat, he turned his attention back on his sister. He had just started to tighten his hold on her before she drew away. “Aww come on Vi, don’t cry.”, he begged, even if she pulled one of her ‘it’s happy tears’ arguments. It was only after she mentioned that he was her brother that he looked yet again at the men that were beside her and actually recognized them. Well damn, he’d been roughing it too long obviously, since he hadn’t even recognized them as anything further than a possible threat at first.

[style=width: 370px; background-color:#a3a3b9; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; padding: 15px; color: #cccccc;]I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE it was impossible for him to be here, and violet couldn't quite get her head wrapped around the fact that iain was standing right in front of her. they were miles from home, in a completely different part of skyrim, yet, here they were. it felt like forever since she'd seen her older brother, since the day he left to join the stormcloaks it must have been, and although she'd been tempted to write, violet didn't know if he would receive her letters. what luck had brought them on the same road at the same moment, violet didn't know, but silently she said thanks to the gods for this fortuitous meeting, even if it felt completely unreal.
adding to her disbelief was the change that seemed to have come over him. no longer did he look like the son of a powerful thane. he donned stormcloak armor, and just looked.. rougher. of course, hints of his noble birth were there, violet could see. the way he carried himself, the resemblance he bore both to her and her parents. but without the background of solitude, or the exquisite clothing he had worn when residing in solitude, iain would have appeared a complete stranger to anyone else but her.
"Yes, it's me." Violet almost shrieked in delight as Iain exclaimed in disbelief. if this was a dream, it was certainly a happy one. once the tears began sliding down her cheeks, violet couldn't stop them. she tried to wipe them away with the back of her hand, but to no avail. instead, she grinned through them, trying not to sob too loud. "i-i can't help it." she said, laughter bubbling through her words. "it's just.. i haven't seen you in such a long time!" and with that, she wrapped her arms around iain again.
as one of her guards behind her cleared his throat, violet let go of her brother reluctantly. "what are you doing here? i thought you were fighting, or scouting, or something." the words came out in a rush, giving away her excitement at once. in no way did she approve of her brother's decision to get involved in the war, but no doubt he thought he was doing the right thing. and if iain wanted to fight, violet supported that. in fact, she was a little envious of his freedom to decide the course of his life. it was one of the few things that made her wish she had been born a boy, if only to have more control over her life. the gods knew she spent most of her childhood trying to prove she was just as good as her brothers at everything they did. unfortunately, it had never been enough.
"have you come from riften? did you see mother?" once she started, violet just couldn't stop. there was so much she wanted to ask, but she realized standing in the middle of the road was no place to hold a true conversation. "wait, we've set up camp down the road. sit with us. please?" blinking her blue eyes at him, violet knew he'd agree to it. the pair had always been close, and she truly wanted to hear everything he had done since the moment she'd said goodbye to him. even if it took all day.

As soon as he got over his shock, Iain felt joy warm him.
His sister’s obvious joy caused one of his wide grins to settle over his face. Talos he had missed her, along with her bright smiles and cheerful nature. He missed the hugs he got from her and the listening ear when he needed one. She was in his arms and back out before he could even get a proper hug though, but it was enough. After Iain realized that the men rushing toward them were no threat to Violet or himself, he could relax a bit, even shift his weight around from foot to foot. And all the while he found himself grinning down at his younger sister with a bit of a stupid look. It felt like it had been a lifetime since he had last seen her or any of the family. How long had it really been? Couldn’t have been so long…only a few months? Damn, that was a short period of time for him to feel like it had been a lifetime.
Her tears caused his smile to slip a bit, concern on his features when he begged her to stop crying. If there was one thing he and his brothers hated, it was seeing Violet sad or crying. It was some of the times where he felt helpless, and so he just stood there somewhat awkwardly, patting at her shoulder while she wiped the tears away. “I sure hoped they weren’t from the disappointment of seeing me.”, he teased, lightly pulling at the ends of her hair like he always did when he teased her. “Because I have to admit, that wouldn’t have made me feel very good.” Oh man, it was good to see her. He worried about her while he was out here, perhaps more than the rest. His father would be fine, his mother still had a few strapping sons at home to protect her, and his brothers could hold their own. He didn’t doubt that she would be alright physically, but he worried mentally and emotionally how she was doing. He wouldn’t even try to deny that she had it the hardest among them. They could choose their lives, but hers would be handed to her, whether she liked the ending or not.
The thought wanted to make him curse right then and there, but he held his tongue and his thoughts…for now. Instead, he gave her a proper hug, squeezing her to his chest tightly. In the back of his mind, he’d been worried he’d never see his family again. He quickly drew back and held her at arm’s length when she started to ask him so many questions. “I was…” Glancing at the men that his father employed, Iain hesitated. They were loyal to the family, but one never knew, and so he dropped his voice a bit. “Stationed in Riften for a bit, but they have me on the way to another location to scout out a few things.”, he explained. Iain had to chuckle at how excited she was getting. He didn’t blame her for being excited about it though. She had to deal with her freedom slowly slipping away from her, he was sure she wanted to hear a little bit about some freedom or something exciting.
“Woah, what? Mother’s in Riften?” Iain rubbed the back of his neck in thought, before shaking his head. “I wasn’t…really right in Riften, so no, I hadn’t noticed her being there.” Quirking a brow, he glanced up at the sky. He supposed he shouldn’t be mad at his parents for what they were causing his favorite sibling to go through. It was…the way things went, he supposed, but it wasn’t fair, and he didn’t care if they knew he felt that way. Still, they were his parents and he supposed that he should make up for the biting remarks he’d said about what he thought of their decision to ‘sell’ Violet off to the highest bidder before he’d left. The least he could do was apologize now that he’d had some time to cool down and think about his family. After all, he’d had plenty of time on the long rides to think about his family. Poking her lightly in the side, he quirked an eyebrow at her. “What is this anyway Vi, twenty questions?” Of course he was teasing her again, that much had to be evident by the cocky little grin on his lips.
And of course the next question was to stay. Glancing from the sky, and the sun’s progress, to the blue eyes widened and looking all too pleading, Iain hesitated only a moment before giving in. “Alrigt Sis, I can sit and chat. Been too long since I saw my best sister anyway.”, he commented lightly. Looking over her shoulder at the little group, he gestured toward his palomino stallion. “Hop on Sis, Zavier can stand to have a lighter weight on his back for a bit.”

[style=width: 370px; background-color:#a3a3b9; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; padding: 15px; color: #cccccc;]I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE "of course not, iain." violet said, bumping him gently with her elbow. "i'm glad to see you. you know that." she knew her brother was just teasing, but she was too overwhelmed to even tease him back. it was just so... wonderful. violet couldn't have even imagined a greater surprise than bumping into iain on the road.
she wrapped her arms around iain again as he squeezed her tight, closing her eyes a small smile spreading over her lips. when he pushed her back, vi didn't fight, but part of her wanted to never let go. moments before she desired to run home and hide under the bed; with iain being here, clutching onto him was the next best thing. she knew he opposed their parents plans, but there was nothing either of them could do. she sighed slightly at the thought, only to have her attention drawn back to iain as he hesitated to answer her question. it took her a moment to figure out that it was caused by her guard which now stood behind her. she leaned closer as iain lowered his voice, smiling to herself as he explained what he was doing. "interesting. so, no actual fighting then?" try as she might, violet couldn't keep the concern out of her voice. picturing iain fighting featureless imperial soldiers was bad enough, without picturing the familiar recruits who trained at castle dour as her brother's opponents. she did worry about iain, more than her mother did, violet was sure of it.
Violet nodded her head at Iain's repeating what she said. "she rode ahead yesterday. she should have arrived there at some point today." in truth violet had no idea, but she presumed her calculations were correct. she was travelling at a much slower speed than her mother had been, and they were expected to arrive in riften before afternoon the next day. well, that was before their sudden halt. now violet had no clue when they'd arrive in the city. she was disappointed to hear that iain hadn't seen their mother. "that's a shame. she would have loved to see you." she let out a high pitched giggle once he prodded her in the side. violet had always been incredibly ticklish, and she resumed laughing long after she squirmed out of reach. "no," she said, a wide grin still on her face. "i just want to know what you've been up to, is all."
"your only sister, you mean." violet corrected him, flashing him a grin. "aron doesn't count." letting out a laugh at their absent elder brother's expense, violet shook her head. it was only when iain told her to mount his horse that she settled down. "if you insist." she shrugged before moving towards the horse. violet patted the stallion's side gently, wondering if it remembered her at all, or even recognized her before moving towards the saddle. putting a foot in the stirrup, violet swung herself up onto the horses back. adjusting herself into the saddle gently, violet looked to iain, giving him a short nod to let him know she was okay. her own mare was back at the makeshift camp, and she'd been riding for what felt like days on end. but seeing iain had put the aches and pains she was experiencing to the back of her mind, and sitting on zavier's back was far easier than mounting her own horse had been earlier that day.

That confident grin of his showed itself after she bumped him back with her elbow.“I know Vi, but you know, I have to tease you a little bit. It’s my brotherly right.” Thus was the way of a brother and sister, teasing was simply another way to show affection, especially for Iain, who had long viewed his sister as yet another brother. It had been hard for him, to think of her as a sister when she started to develop into one, since up until then he and his brothers had taken her with them almost everywhere. Life hadn’t made sense with her in fancy dresses and pretty hairdos, but…that was the way life had gone there toward the later years, much to his disappointment. And now look where they were. Iain figured he’d done just as much changing as she herself had. Instead of looking like the son of a wealthy, powerful man, Iain wore rough armor, well suited for his life was a Stormcloak, and rarely stayed in the same place for more than a few days, if even that. Yet he retained his own sense of identity. It showed in the way he walked, talked, carried himself, and dealt with others, very much showing his good breeding.
But the point was that he had a whole hell of a lot rougher life now then he’d had when he had been under the protection of his parent’s roof. Iain regretted the way he had left, but he couldn’t honestly bring himself to regret his decision. Even if he died out here, at least he would have done so for a purpose. Though he didn’t doubt that Violet knew that he would have been in battles, he didn’t want to completely let on to how rough life could be out in the wilderness. Her question on scouting made him agree. Lately he had been doing more of that than any actual fighting, at least in brute force kind of attacking. He had sniped a few people off with his bow and arrows, been in a few skirmishes, but other than that not much. Still, he knew she had to be worried, and had to smile in the roundabout way she was asking if he was alright. He wasn’t going to be the one to worry her over much. “Nah Sis, not much recently. They have me running halfway around the country most of the time, but as for actually fighting, I got a promotion, so not so much of that anymore.”
He’d hoped that he had explained it enough so that she would quit worrying. Iain could just be thankful that it was her instead of his mother as well; who he was sure would be much more open about her worry. Speaking of their mother, it seemed that she was actually close by, which surprised him. So much that he quirked a brow when he looked at his sister. He might not have totally forgiven his parents for what they were doing to his sister, but he had to admit that he would rather there be peace among the family. And so he found that he actually regretted that she had gone ahead and that he’d missed her. “Maybe I’ll delay leaving and drop by to see her.”, he mused aloud, brushing his fingers over the stubble on his chin. “Is she resting at the Inn?”
Quickly it turned to questions again, in which he remarked that this must be twenty questions. The answer was honest, and he could understand that she didn’t mean to be overbearing or anything, which just made him try to smile reassuringly at her.“I know, Vi, but I’m careful, promise. Or…as careful as I can be.”, he admitted sheepishly.
Quickly he gestured toward his stallion, before she mentioned that she was his only sister. Alright, so she had a po-…Poor Aron. Instantly the laughter came bubbling up and he couldn’t quite help himself, before he was snickering all over the place. “Good thing Aron isn’t here Vi, or he’d blush and stutter on about how he’s a man.”, he said good naturedly, before standing and holding his stallion while she lifted herself on his back, before he handed her the reins. “Alright Sis, lead the way.” Yawning, Iain gave his stallion a pat on the shoulder and glanced back at the men accompanying Violet. “Speaking of Aron…how are those brothers of ours?”

[style=width: 370px; background-color:#a3a3b9; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; padding: 15px; color: #cccccc;]I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE violet breathed a sigh of relief at hearing iain wasn't doing so much fighting these days. "good." she breathed, serious for a moment before turning back to him with a small smile on her face. "wouldn't want my sparring buddy to be put out of action." still, violet was aware that scouting could still prove dangerous. it saddened her to think that he could be injured at any point in time, and she'd have no clue. none of their family would. more than anything, violet wanted to ask iain to come with her and mother, but she knew he wouldn't. honor and his beliefs kept him with the stormcloaks, and while violet admired it, she also felt like it would get him into trouble sooner or later.
but she stopped that train of thought immediately. already she was nibbling on her lip, a sure sign that she was worrying. needlessly, in fact. for the time being, iain was here, and out of harm's way. "no. we're staying in.. mistveil keep." violet stated, taking a moment to remember what the jarl's residence in the riften was actually called. having never been to the rift, all she knew of it was what her mother and father had told her before she had left solitude. "you don't think the arroways would reside in an inn on our travels?" violet gave him a teasing disbelievingly look before bursting into a fresh bout of laughter. in all honesty, violet would have preferred to stay in an inn, purely because she was sure the locals were more interesting than this jarl would ever be, but she was sure her mother would never hear of it. they were the jarl's honored guests, and he had rooms for them in the keep.
"you better be careful, iain." violet warned him. "otherwise i might just have to accompany you to help keep you out of trouble." she grinned at him. she didn't exactly agree with everything the stormcloaks stood for, in fact violet didn't agree with the civil war at all, but iain's life sounded far more exhilarating than her own at the present time. and she couldn't help but be envious. traveling was her dream, and although that was what she was doing, violet wished she didn't have such pressure placed on her. all she wanted was to be free.
when iain turned the topic of conversation to their brothers, violet just shrugged. "as good as ever, i guess." she started, before knowing she'd be prompted to go into more detail. "well, erik's wife had his second son just before i left home. he's always with dad at meetings and such, being heir, you know." the eldest arroway child was probably violet's favorite, after iain, simply because he had always encouraged violet's more rambunctious side. he found it amusing when violet tried to act like the boys, much to their mother's disdain. "aron's still father's housecarl, but he's not married yet. i swear mother was considering bringing him along with us." a light chuckle bubbled from her lips, as she shook her head slowly. aron was perhaps the stubbornest of all of them, which was why he seemed to be the one left out of things more often than not. but violet did love him. he had a good mind for tactics as well as being a talented fighter. he was never good at standing up for himself when challenged, hence iain's earlier statement about him stuttering. "they miss their little brother, you know." violet let out another lighthearted laugh, as they approached their makeshift camp. "here we are." violet said, wistfully. talking to iain about her family at home had almost made her forget that home was actually miles away.
"would you like something to eat?" violet asked iain, after dismounting from the stallion, and patting him gently on the head as thanks for bearing her up the path. "we could always go hunting." a sparkle entered violet's eyes then, and her grin quickly turned mischievous. there had been nothing more she wanted to do for days on end, but with mother constantly watching over her, violet had no chance to hunt. with iain here, it would be just like old times. Iain couldn’t help but smile when she mentioned that she didn’t want her sparring partner out of commission. Those had been the days. When they had all been but children, she had been right alongside he and his brothers, doing everything that they did. That though, had been quite a while before. Though he would admit she was just as good with a bow and arrow as any of them were, Iain also had no desire to harm her in any sort of combat. Still, just the memories of her dressed as a boy, holding her own next to them caused a smile to lift onto his lips. He wished that they were still back in those times, instead of their current situations. If so, than she wouldn’t be wandering around through Skyrim and be forced to marry someone, and he wouldn’t have to be missing his family every day that he was out here in the wilderness, talking to yet another battle hungry Nord male. “You just might win if I was put out of action.”
So they weren’t staying at the Inn. He should have honestly guessed that. He supposed he could blame being out here in the wilderness for way too long. Iain nodded when she mentioned where they were. That sounded right, though he sure didn’t spent much time paying attention to the different keeps. Sheepishly he grinned at her while she teased him, but quickly rushed to his own defense. “Hey now Vi, here I’ve been, roughing it out in the wilderness and forgetting those things mom and dad tried beating into our head for the last million years. What are they called again?” For a second Iain pretended to be thinking deeply, before he acted as if a light had just flickered over him. “Ohhh that’s right, etiquette. Silly me, how could I have forgotten that?” Iain wasn’t really lying too much. Out here, people didn’t give a damn about etiquette or the rules of high society. All you really cared about was keeping an arrow out of your back, some mead and food in your belly, and the Imperials at bay. “Don’t let mother know that. She’d throw a fit if she thought I’d forgotten my good breeding."
Even though their parents would probably die with their daughter in the army, Iain didn’t think it was such a bad idea, that of having Vi travel with him through the country. “Oh I dunno Sis, you’d have to be able to keep up with me. Looks like you’ve been getting soft in your old age.”, he mentioned, lifting one of her arms as if inspecting it. That was a straight up lie. She looked just as fit as ever really, and he couldn’t be more thankful that at least one thing from his past was the same. Unfortunately, change would have to continue to progress.
Though at least his brothers seemed to be the same as well. “Damn!”, he exclaimed over his being an uncle twice over. Instantly catching his own language, Iain excused himself. He really had been around rough and tumble Nords for a bit too long. “He’s been pretty busy, eh?” Iain nodded along when Violet mentioned that he was with their father a lot. When he was younger, Iain had envied his older brothers for their position, especially Erik. Now that he was older, he appreciated that Erik took that position as heir so that Iain could be free to live his life as he wanted, instead of being bound to the family business by chains. He thirsted for adventure for the time being, rather than to be tied down in one location. Especially if that location happened to be near the Thalmor. Perhaps the sibling he had been the least attached was Aron. Not that he didn’t love his older brother, but he was different from the rest of them slightly. “Mom want him married off as well and producing kids every few years?” That was an odd thought. “Well she’d better not be getting ideas for me.” Eying at his sister, Iain shook his head. He’d always thought that someday he’d settle down, but as for right now, he would rather be doing whatever he wanted. There was plenty of time for that responsibility once the war was over – if it ever would be over.
He felt instant guilt when she mentioned that they missed him. “I know sis…I miss them too. But…this is more important right now.”, he said seriously. A rarity for him. “The rule of the Thalmor needs to come to an end.” His voice was laced with emotion, anger toward the race of High Elves. “We’re Nords Vi. I can’t stand back and watch them do this to Skyrim. Once the war is over, I’ll be back.” All he had to do was survive until that time. If he dared to die, he’d bet money that Violet would find some way to bring him back from the dead just for the sole purpose on sending him to his grave again. The thought caused him to smile even as they came into their camp.
When she got off Zavier, Iain set about caring for his palomino stallion. Loosening his cinch, Iain lifted his saddle and saddlebags off, before slipping the bridle off the stallion. He had enough trust in the stallion to ensure that he would actually stay here instead of wandering off, and so he just slipped his halter onto the palomino and cuffed him affectionately on the neck, earning a velvet nose to his chest. Iain wasn’t going to resist any sort of food, and was nodding in response when she suggested they go hunt for their food. With a swinging of gaze toward her, he flickered up an eyebrow and slowly grinned. “If you think you can keep up.”, he challenged, lifting his bow in front of him with a sparkle in his eye.

[style=width: 370px; background-color:#a3a3b9; text-transform: uppercase; font-size: 9px; padding: 15px; color: #cccccc;]I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE Violet let out a laugh at Iain's feigning to have forgotten the etiquette lessons all the Arroway children had been through over the years. Violet knew they had been ingrained in her mind for the rest of her life, but she didn't blame Iain for forgetting them. He'd been out of Solitude for a while, living with soldiers and other rough types. Violet was a little envious of Iain. Not only was he able to venture across Skyrim, he could basically make his own decisions. It wasn't the first time Violet wished she was a boy, nor would it be the last. She was just so sick of being treated differently because she was female. She might not be as talented as her brother's when it came to the arts of war, but she could defend herself, both in a fight and from the snooty ladies her mother had befriended over the years. But no one seemed to believe her. "Your secret's safe with me, brother." Violet giggled, knowing her mother would be appalled to learn her youngest son wasn't acting the perfect little gentleman.
Violet snatched her arm back as Iain lifted it, a grin on her face at his cheekiness. "Old age? Says the one who is three whole years older than me." She poked her tongue out at him. It was very unladylike of her, but there was no one there to go running to her mother to tell her Violet was behaving indecently. "I could still take you on." she insisted. Iain didn't look that much stronger; weather-worn, sure, but under the dirt, he was pretty much exactly as she remembered him to be.
Another giggle burst from Violet's lips as Iain cursed out loud. "Oh, I am definitely telling Mother about that." she teased, though Violet would do no such thing. She understood the shock. Being an aunt was something she couldn't quite get used to. "Very busy." Violet laughed. She nodded slowly as Iain asked whether their mother wanted Aron wed and having children. "Of course she does. She wants that for all of us." she informed him. Her mother seemed intent on having as many grandchildren as possible before she got too old to enjoy them. If Violet had her way, she wouldn't be having children for some time. "And that includes you. So if you choose to bring home a nice soldier girl, you'll quickly become Mom's new favorite." Violet winked at him. Her brother's romantic relations wasn't a topic she normally brought up, but teasing Iain about his little crushes had always been fun.
Hearing the guilt and seriousness in his tone, Violet's eyebrows furrowed together. She admired that Iain believed in what he was fighting for, going against their father's decision to remain completely neutral in the civil war. She'd heard Iain's speech before, when he had explained to her why he was leaving the safety of home, but that didn't mean Violet missed him any less. When he told her he'd be back, Violet looked at him, her face blank. "Promise?" she questioned. It was childish to make him promise something he had no control over, but it would keep Violet satisfied for now. "Because if you don't, I will come and haul you back to Solitude." A smile broke out on Violet's face, even though she was deadly serious.
"I know I can keep up." Violet replied confidently, a smirk gracing her features. She'd been itching to go hunting for days, but with her mother ever present, and no guards willing to go against the Lady Arroway to take Violet into the wilds, the young Nord had no choice but to stick with her party. But now that Iain was here, Violet knew her guards would surely have no problem with them taking a short walk through the woods. And if they happened to come across some game, Violet was sure they'd love to eat fresh deer, rather than the dry meat in their stores. "Just give me a moment."
With that, she darted off in the direction of the tent that her men had hurriedly put up once they had heard they were staying for a couple of hours. Shooing them out of her tent, it didn't take Violet long to find the worn leather armor she held onto at all times. Pulling her dress over her head and throwing it carelessly to the ground, Violet pulled on the armor, pleased to find it still fitted her almost perfectly. It had been made for someone else, sold to the blacksmith in Solitude for some gold, but no one had ever bought it. Upon seeing it, Violet had asked if she would be able to buy it. The blacksmith agreed, took her gold, and Violet had a near new set of armor to call her own. Once it was on, she grabbed her bow and quiver, slung them on her back so she could rush out of the tent to where she'd left Iain waiting for her.
Excited as she was, Violet beamed at him, grabbing a spare strip of leather to tie back her unruly hair. "I'm ready when you are." she announced, eager to get going. IAIN/TAIYA | 870 | really hoping this makes sense >> [/style]

A warning to the people. The good and the evil
Iain couldn’t help but wink when he heard his sister giggling. It had been so damned long since he’d heard seen or talk to her, that Iain wouldn’t have minded standing there for hours just to drink in hearing her. He credited it to the conditions he’d been living in. Not that he’d starved or anything like that – since he could get any food he needed with his own abilities. No, it wasn’t that he was lacking nutrients. He was lacking those conversations that you had every day that kept you sane. The guys could talk about, you know, the latest weapon, a conquest, a mead drinking contest, and the hair on their chests, but as for deep conversations, or giggling, they were severely lacking on that, both of which Iain had gotten plenty of before, and had been craving. Curling an arm around her shoulders, Iain smirked down at his sister. “You’d better keep my secret, or else I’ll sick old Mrs. Triest on you.”, he warned, referring to one of his mother’s friends. Iain had always called her ‘the old bat’, much to his mother’s horror. It was true though, she really was an old bat.
As soon as she mentioned his age over hers, Iain let his arm drop from around her shoulders and bent his knees slightly, clasping his arms around his stomach as if she had dealt a devastating blow to his mid-section. “OOooohh Vi! Oooh that was totally uncalled for! Oh it hurts. I don’t think I can go on with life. Do me a favor Sis, there’s cane in my saddlebags! Get it for me, would you?” Dramatic? Sure, but that was normally how Iain went through life. It added some more excitement to it, or at least he thought.
His dramatic play was cut short when she started to tell him about their family. Iain missed them more than even he admitted to himself. It was easy to admit that you missed your little sister that you had always been tight with growing up. But admitting that you missed your two older brothers? Well, that was something else entirely. Still, he had to express his surprise at his eldest brother making him an uncle twice over, instantly catching himself. His sheepish grin indicated that he didn’t quite believe her when she told him that she was telling their mother. In her mind, they could swear, but never around a lady. And despite having that ‘another brother’ vibe growing up, Violet was definitely a lady where it mattered.
His laughter echoed when she mentioned about his bringing home a nice soldier girl. “Believe me sis, there aren’t many ‘nice’ soldier girls around. If it’s not some sweaty guy that talks about the length of their chest hair, it’s a girl that wants to prove that she’s just as masculine as the guys. I’ll stick to someone that doesn’t have as deep a voice as me.”, he teased her back. “And as for favorites, you know Erik’s been her favorite for a while.”, he concluded. The children, he was sure, wouldn’t hurt that bit either.
It was amazing how they could go from completely teasing to serious, and then back to the first. He knew that Violet and the rest must be worried about him, but he shrugged it off for the most part. Now however, with her giving him those big eyes, he couldn’t escape it. And so he nodded. “Yeah, you don’t have to worry about me Vi. I’ll be okay! I’m too good looking to die anyway.”, he concluded with a grin. He didn’t doubt her that she would come and find him either, that was for sure. If she said something, she usually meant it…
And speaking of keeping up. He had to challenge her slightly when she told him that she could keep up. With crossed arms, he nodded after her as she scuttled away with sayings of holding on a minute. While he waited, Iain glanced around him. The camp looked secure enough, though he’d rather the men keep a closer eye on Violet. Not that she couldn’t take care of herself…but this was a time when one couldn’t be too careful. He’d been so concentrated on the camp that he barely noticed the time that passed until once again Violet was there beside him. Glancing down at her, he raised his eyebrow. “Woah, who are you and what have you done with the lady I was with?”, he asked in mock shock, before he pretended to glance over her shoulder as if checking for the ‘lady’. After a moment, he appraised her for serious, stroking at his stubble while he did so. “Well…you might be able to keep up with me. You sure look a lot more likely to.”, he mentioned while he went to grab his own bow from Zavier’s saddle. Gesturing toward his sister, Iain met the eyes of one of the guards that looked worried. “We’ll be back in a bit.” Trotting backwards past Violet, he raised a brow. “I’m already waiting for you! What’s this about keeping up anyway?” With a little chuckle, he turned and jogged out of the camp, slowing just a bit to allow her the time to catch up. Sure felt good to be out here…it felt really good. This means War Words; 945 Outfit; Leather armor Tagged Violet Notes; The cute :3 ELLE LIKE COOL of ESM |

I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE "well, bring home a nice farm girl, then." violet rolled her eyes. she was sure her brother was exaggerating. not all female soldiers would give up their femininity just to prove they were as skilled as the men in battle, did they? "mother's determined you'll wed when you've finished playing at war." violet said, echoing her mother's words exactly. she threw an apologetic glance at iain, before continuing. "she means when you come home. she's worried about you." violet had already said that, but it was true. her mother believed iain would grow bored and come home sooner or later. but violet knew better. after seeing iain today, it was clear he believed in the cause he was fighting for.
"i do have to worry about you, iain." violet insisted, ignoring his comment about being too good looking to die for the time being. he was trying to pass it off as nothing, but from what violet had heard, exchanges between imperials and stormcloaks were fierce, and bloody. no matter how much her parents tried to hide that truth from her, violet knew it. "and even handsome men can die. though i have no idea what that has to do with you." violet teased him, a smile lighting her features once more. this was no time for worrying. violet was still just so glad to see him alive and well.
"I tied her up and stuffed her in the tent, of course." violet spoke as it were the most obvious thing. "you don't mind, do you? i'll let her out later." winking at him, violet rolled her shoulders back, preparing herself for the most exercise she'd been allowed to do for quite some time. playing the part of a lady for the better part of the last year meant violet didn't have as much time to devote to her more physical pursuits. she just hoped she hadn't got so rusty that iain had cause to laugh at her. when she realized he had started off without her, violet rushed after him. "that's not fair. i wasn't ready!" the complaint came easily from her lips, sounding very much the younger sister. when she finally caught up to iain, she wasn't out of breath so much as breathless with excitement. only now did she realize just how much she'd been dying to do some hunting.
"let's go this way." violet said once they were far enough away from their makeshift camp for coming across animals to be a possibility. violet had seen deer on their way up the road, but the animals had darted away before her guards had time to shoot them down. already the prospect of eating fresh venison had her mouth watering. she was tired of the usual fare they feasted on the road. dried meat had lost its appeal very quickly. violet slowed her steps down, barely making a sound as she stepped through the grasses. drawing her bow, violet slowly took an arrow from her quiver, drawing the string back slowly in preparation to shoot at first notice. a noise to her right caught her attention, but nothing showed itself immediately. her face was set into a blank mask as she stepped through into a clearing, disappointment flowing through her as she saw it was empty. "where are they?" she whispered, giving iain a sideways glance. violet had been dying to hunt, but it seemed the local wildlife had other ideas. IAIN/TAIYA | 574 | hunting tiem!

Iain groaned lightly when Violet told him once more that his mother had grand plans for his future. “When I find the right girl, I’ll know it.”, he concluded finally. That was the story that he had in his head. Maybe it wasn’t correct. But…he had plenty of time to settle down and think about that. Right now perhaps the furthest thing from his mind was marriage and who he should find to settle down with for a lifelong mate. He didn’t really want a simple farm girl that didn’t know how to count the toes on her feet, but he didn’t want anything to do with the wealthy girls that had nothing more to think about than the next frilly dress and tea party. Why was finding good women so hard? Why couldn’t they all be like…well, Vi? She had a head on her shoulders and a steady hand with a bow. “You know…if that’s the name of the game, I might just make this war stretch out a few more years than it’ll be right now.”
Her words about even handsome men being able to die just caused his chest to puff out. “Well you know Vi, the handsomest of men can-…awwww, go ahead and ruin it why don’t you.”, he ended with fake drama when she teased him about that not referring to him. Along with that, came a slight pout when his lower lip came forward more, his eyes sorrowful. But of course she was teasing. After all, Iain knew his own appeal. Knew it quite well in fact.
But that aside, it was time for hunting now! Iain pulled his familiar bow from his back and winked at his sister, before starting to tease her about her appearance. He knew this Violet much more than the other one, though their mother insisted on her being a lady. “Stuffed her away? Oh yeah, that’s totally fine. I’m sure the nice menfolk around here won’t notice a lovely young lady shouting for help from the tent. We should be fine until we get back. At least if we hurry.” With that urging, Iain was off, teasing her about being slow. Her ‘outrage’ just made him smirk, “I can’t help being born ready.”
Soon things settled down to the actual hunt though. Shifting his bow lightly with his hands, the young man nodded eagerly at her direction. That worked out perfectly fine for him. After all, it wasn’t like he had been doing much hunting while also stationed as a Stormcloak soldier, so this counted as recreation time. Attuned to everything around him, Iain slipped an arrow from his quiver and onto his bowstring while they slipped through the grasses. Hearing his sisters whispered question, Iain shrugged a shoulder, before shifting toward the sound. Pausing one other second, Iain finally motioned her to follow him and started to the right, quietly moving down the slight cliff that jutted out. Landing with a muffled ‘thump’, he saw the movement out of his right eye and crouched slightly, motioning silence toward Vi, before pointing out the doe and buck that jogged before them, wearily flickering their ears back and forth. Unfortunately they were out of sight before he could get a clear shot. “Shoot. Let’s track them.”, he breathed out.

I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE it had been such a long time since vi had the time and lack of parental supervision to hunt, that she thought it was a miracle she was able to remain as silent as she was. her footfalls through the grass were light, the only sound being the grass rubbing against her light boots, which was impossible to dull completely, though she tried. she was glad for the freedom of the pants she wore. not only were they the most comfortable clothing she had worn in some time, violet was able to move lithely, rather than pottering around like some stuffed duck. and perhaps even a duck had more grace than she did when it came to her usual garb.
the noise caught violet's attention as it did iain's, though her eyes darted immediately to her right soon after. her older brother didn't have to motion for her to keep quiet. violet knew how to hunt. no matter how long her mother spent trying to beat it out of her (figuratively, of course) violet would know how to hunt. she wouldn't quite say she was a natural at it, not in the way her brothers were, but violet had worked hard to earn her skill with a bow. there was nothing that could erase the effort she had put into it.
her eyes followed the buck and doe as they leapt across the clearing in front of them. they were too fast for violet to release an arrow with any luck of getting a good shot, and with the long grasses, violet knew finding an arrow after she released it might not be possible. as vi knew she'd be unable to purchase more until the next time her mother's back was turned, violet held onto it, saving it for later. her arrows were precious, and she wasn't about to waste them.
"Mm," she hummed in agreement with iain, moving forward carefully towards the gap in the tress the deer had made for. with any luck, they hadn't gone too far, and the two nords would be able to track them and bring them back to camp before nightfall.
after trekking through some low scrub and tress for a few minutes, it opened up into another clearing, though this one was much larger than the one the two arroways had stood in earlier. on the otherside, violet could make out the distance shape of the two deer, heads lowered to the ground as they fed on the grass at their feet. drawing her bow again, violet began to line up the shot, before glancing at her brother. "left or right?" she asked him in a hushed voice, asking which he'd take down. it was some distance, but no more than the range set up in solitude at home. just being in the wilds made it seem so much.. larger. violet waited with bated breath for her brother's answer. as long as nothing else startled the creatures, and their shots were true, they'd make it back to camp in no time. With his sister in agreement, Iain gestured in the direction that the two deer had gone and gave her that arrogant grin of his. It took only a moment to gather themselves before they were off, led by his sister. Iain had no problems allowing his sister to lead them. She was just as good at tracking, and could do everything else just about as good as he could anyway. Besides, from what he could guess, she’d had hardly any time to do anything that she actually loved doing. No doubt their prim mother had been around the entire time, trying to make sure that Vi was the picture of an absolutely perfect noblewoman. He’d never quite gotten that anyway. Who wanted a perfect noblewoman for a wife anyway? He wanted someone like-…well, his sister, not one of those perfect twits that lived for new clothes. So why would any other man want a woman like what their mother seemed to want Vi to be like? Didn’t make any sense to him.
Besides, what could beat a noblewoman with a bow in hand, pushing through the underbrush while she stalked her prey anyway? With a wry smile, Iain hefted up his own bow and slowly made his way after her. Even he was surprised on how quickly they closed in on the two deer, who had stopped to munch on some grass tuffs that were sticking up through the snow.
With the deer in sight, Iain notched his arrow yet again and sighted at the animals across the clearing. Having hunted with his younger sister plenty of times in his lifetime, Vi’s question didn’t need any sort of explanation to the young Nord. He knew what she was asking when she did so. With a slight shrug, Iain decided to give her the trophy of a buck and take the doe. After all, she could use a little extra excitement in her life with all she’d probably had to go through in the past few months while he ran around willy nilly. “You get the right.”, he said in reply, referring to the larger stag that was standing there grazing without a thought to the world.
Until it snapped its head up, nostrils flared as it took in their scent. “Shoot.”, he muttered out, before pulling his bowstring back as far as he could. With the tension pulling at his shoulder, Iain released his breath the same moment as he released his arrow. There was always that second after shooting that you weren’t sure if you had hit the mark or not. With a startled bleat, the doe bounded two giant leaps to the side before it crumbled to the ground. “Alright!”, he said, swept up in the excitement. Even soldiers had to have entertainment every once in a while.

I'M TRYING TO KEEP FROM GOING INSANE Violet flicked a look to Iain quickly when he told her to go for the stag on the right. It was an attempt to ask him if he was sure, but by the way he was lining up his own shot, Violet assumed that he did mean it. She didn't know if she could take it down, but she could damn well try. All that was left was to line up the shot properly, the bowstring already drawn back to her cheek. Almost just as she was going to release, however, the buck bolted. It was all Violet could do not to let out a growl of frustration. But she tried her best to remain patience. They had hours yet before they had to be back at camp, and Violet was intent on bringing back something. Even if it was just a measly rabbit.
Next to her, Vi was aware Iain had released his own arrow, his reaction speeds unhindered by being indoors. Her eyes watched the doe fall to the ground, a grin spreading across her face at hearing her brother's excitement. "Calm down, Iain," she chided him, unable to help but laugh at him. For a moment, he was just a child, and Violet found herself sharing in his joy. "There's still one more." But Violet wasn't sure if they'd even catch the buck, after they'd investigated the doe. If the stag was clever, he'd have run as far as he could get. The thought frustrated Vi, but it couldn't be helped. She was not going to chase after the buck through lands she didn't know. She might have been eager to get a kill, but not so much that she was willing to put herself in danger.
"Let's go." Violet got to her feet, brushing the grass off herself quickly before striding into the clearing towards her brother's doe. It was rather sad looking, the way it lay on the ground, but judging from where Iain's arrow had struck it, it had died reasonably quickly. "Great shot," Violet told him, a surge of pride welling within her. It was true the Arroways were famed for their skills with the bow, but Iain was certainly among the best even within their family. She stepped back, allowing her brother to deal with the doe as he pleased. She didn't know if he wanted to carry it with them as Violet found something to shoot at, but Violet didn't see many other options. Leaving her here for the wolves seemed a waste, and Violet couldn't carry the deer herself. Violet had to be thankful that the doe didn't look particularly heavy. And no doubt the weight her brother had put on since roaming the wilds would aid him in lifting her.
"So," Violet started, while her brother was at work on the deer. "Are we going after the buck?" Her eyes were questioning as she looked at him, though she knew (or hoped) he'd agree with her thoughts that chasing after him would be fruitless. "Or should we find something else?" Violet's only concern was that they'd run out of time before nightfall, or Iain would tire with the weight of the deer on his shoulders. Already, though, the urge to get going again was growing in Violet's arms and legs. She hadn't had this much fun in a long time. IAIN/TAIYA | 561 | They areeee
